Job Overview
The District Head Nurse is responsible for the planning, coordination, and oversight of school health services at Garden Plain High School and across Renwick USD 267. This position will provide leadership and support for all school nurses and health paraprofessionals throughout the district, ensuring compliance with state and federal health regulations, promoting student wellness, and fostering safe and healthy school environments.

Qualifications:

  • Current Kansas Registered Nurse (RN) license required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of school nursing or pediatric/public health nursing experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, families, and community health partners
  • Knowledge of Kansas school health regulations and practices
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification (instructor certification preferred) and ACLS.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:District-Level Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead health professional for all school nurses within the district
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and supervision to building-level nurses and health aides
  • Develop and maintain standardized health protocols, procedures, and documentation practices
  • Coordinate professional development and in-service training for school nursing staff
  • Ensure district compliance with KDHE, KSDE, and federal mandates, including immunizations, screenings, and communicable disease control
  • Participate in district-level planning teams including wellness, crisis response, and safety committees
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, and evaluation of nursing staff across the district
  • Act as liaison between the district and local/state public health agencies
  • Review and manage districtwide data reporting related to student health services
  • Monitor all Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) throughout the district to ensure they are charged, functional, and compliant, and coordinate timely replacement as needed
  • Coordinate and schedule CPR and First Aid certification courses for district staff, including monitoring certification status and renewal schedules
  • Plan and lead Skyward Health Module training sessions for district nurses and health staff to ensure accurate and consistent health data documentation

Building-Level Responsibilities at Garden Plain High School:

  • Deliver direct health services and emergency care to students and staff
  • Manage student health records, immunizations, medication administration, and chronic care plans
  • Provide health counseling, support, and referral services
  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers, counselors, and parents to support student success
  • Lead the school’s wellness initiatives and coordinate health-related programming
  • Conduct health screenings and follow-up interventions as required
  • Serve on building-level student support teams and attend IEP/504 meetings as needed

Other Duties:

  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, and district policy
  • Maintain accurate documentation and prepare health reports as needed
  • Stay current on best practices in school health through continuing education and professional organizations
  • Filling in as needed at other buildings if an absence goes unfilled
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Building Principal

Terms of Employment:

  • 195-day contract
  • Salary is commensurate with experience and includes employer contribution to health benefits
  • Evaluated annually by the Superintendent and/or designee
  • Work Schedule Monday-Friday 7:45-4:00. Additional evenings possible during enrollment and parent teacher conferences

Work Environment:

  • This position requires some travel between district schools
  • Requires the ability to respond to medical emergencies and perform nursing procedures
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally and assist students with mobility needs when necessary.
