Job Highlights and Responsibilities

The Associate Counsel position is a full-time remote opportunity, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere while being part of a dynamic team. As an Associate Counsel, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda to support the defense of lawsuits filed in New York courts
  • Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department to ensure informed decision-making
  • Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath
  • Defending cases by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable, to achieve the best possible outcomes for GEICO
  • Collaborating with the Claims Department and other stakeholders to ensure seamless communication and effective case management

Qualifications and Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must possess the following essential qualifications:

  • 2 to 6+ years of experience in related field litigation, with a focus on insurance defense and/or personal injury
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the New York Bar and licensure in good standing to practice law in New York
  • Ability to travel as required, including attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
  • Strong organization, priority setting, and multi-tasking skills, with the ability to document files in a clear, concise, and professional written manner

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Civil litigation experience, with a focus on insurance defense-related litigation
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate in a professional manner in person, via telephone, and written correspondence/email
