About OpenAI

OpenAI is a pioneering artificial intelligence research and development organization dedicated to ensuring that broadly beneficial artificial intelligence helps all of humanity. We push the boundaries of the capabilities of artificial intelligence frameworks and strive to deploy them in the world through our products safely. Artificial intelligence is an incredibly powerful resource that should be developed with safety and human needs at its core, and to achieve our mission, we must incorporate and value the diverse perspectives, voices, and experiences that form the full range of humanity.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Data Scientist to join our Information Researcher group in the Applied AI team. As an early individual from this group, you will help establish the data-driven AI development culture for either consumer products or designer platforms at OpenAI. You will be responsible for defining our north-star metrics, planning our first A/B tests, and establishing source-of-truth dashboards that the entire organization can use to answer their own product questions. Specifically, you will be a key member of the product development team building our first-party offerings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the product development team as a trusted partner, uncovering better ways to improve the product and drive growth.
  • Define and interpret A/B tests that help answer fundamental questions about the impact of model and UX changes to our product.
  • Establish a data-driven product development culture by driving the definition, tracking, and operationalizing of feature, product, and organization-level metrics.
  • Create and integrate dashboards, reports, and other tools to empower the team and organization to answer product data questions in a self-serve way.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • 5+ years of experience in a quantitative role exploring highly ambiguous conditions, preferably as an early data researcher or product analyst at a hyper-growth product organization or research institution.
  • Experience in proposing, planning, and running thorough tests with clear insights and product recommendations using SQL and Python.
  • Ability to define, implement, and operationalize new feature and product-level metrics without prior experience.
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate with product managers, designers, and executives alike.

Preferred Qualifications

You may be an especially great fit if you have:

  • Shown related knowledge in NLP, large language models, or generative artificial intelligence.
  • Solid programming foundation, with ability to run simulations and model variations.
  • Experience validating quantitative insights with qualitative methods (e.g., surveys, UXR).

Compensation, Benefits, and Perks

We offer a comprehensive compensation package that includes:

  • Absolute pay that includes liberal stock and benefits.
  • Clinical, dental, and vision insurance for yourself and your loved ones.
  • Psychological well-being and health support.
  • 401(k) plan with 4% matching.
  • Unlimited vacation time and 18+ company events each year.
  • Paid parental leave (20 weeks) and family-planning support.

Why Join OpenAI?

At OpenAI, we believe that artificial intelligence can potentially help people solve massive global challenges, and we want the potential benefit of artificial intelligence to be widely shared. Join us in shaping the future of technology and helping to create a safer, more equitable world for all.
