Key Responsibilities
- Provide certified clinical oversight to a specific unit of therapeutic recreation personnel as mandated by legislation.
- Assist in the performance evaluation of lower-level therapeutic recreation personnel and determine work assignments, priorities, and procedures.
- Develop performance standards and identify developmental and training needs of employees, providing or arranging for necessary development and training.
- Direct and organize recreation therapy activities, such as sports, dramatics, games, and arts and crafts, to help patients develop interpersonal relationships and socialize effectively.
- Instruct clients in relaxation techniques, calisthenics, and individual and group sports, and counsel them to develop leisure activities.
- Organize and conduct special outings to make patients aware of available recreational resources.
- Prepare progress charts and periodic reports for the medical staff and other members of the treatment team.
- Supervise and conduct in-service training of other staff members, review their assessments and program goals, and consult with them on selected cases.
- May serve as a consultant to other state agencies, educational institutions, and community health programs.
Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications outlined below:
Minimum Qualifications
- General Option: A baccalaureate degree in rehabilitation, recreation, recreation therapy, physical education, music therapy, dance therapy, art therapy, drama therapy, horticultural therapy, or psychology, plus two years of professional-level experience in recreation therapy.
- Psychiatric Option: Either a baccalaureate degree in recreation therapy plus two years of professional-level experience in recreation therapy, or a baccalaureate degree in any field and attainment of certification in accordance with the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, plus two years of professional-level experience in recreation therapy.
Substitutions
- Experience in an organized recreational program can substitute for the required college training on a specified basis.
- A master's degree in a relevant field can substitute for one year of the required experience.
- For the Psychiatric Option, 10 years of experience providing therapeutic recreational services can substitute for the baccalaureate degree and certification.
