About the Role
As a Senior Digital Preservation Specialist at NARA, you will be at the forefront of developing and implementing digital preservation strategies, technologies, and procedures. This remote-based position offers a unique opportunity to work with a talented team of professionals who are passionate about preserving the nation's digital heritage. You will be responsible for advising senior leadership, managing projects, and providing expert consultation on digital preservation matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership and Strategy: Advise the Director and Deputy Director of Digital Preservation on the development, implementation, and operation of the digital preservation program, including recommendations for digital preservation strategies, technologies, guidance, risk criteria, and procedures.
- Project Management: Participate in and manage short- and long-term projects related to the management and preservation of electronic record holdings, ensuring timely and effective completion.
- Data Analysis: Gather, interpret, and analyze complex data to identify patterns, trends, and relationships, drawing conclusions about digital collections and informing preservation decisions.
- Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as a digital preservation subject matter expert, providing consultation and guidance to colleagues within NARA and external partners.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must possess:
- A strong background in digital preservation, with a deep understanding of digital preservation principles, strategies, and technologies.
- Experience in managing and preserving electronic records, including developing and implementing preservation plans and procedures.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
- A GS-13 equivalent level of experience in a related field, or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required skills and competencies.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- A master's degree in a related field, such as digital preservation, archives, or information science.
- Experience working with digital preservation frameworks and standards, such as the Open Archival Information System (OAIS).
- Knowledge of digital forensics and preservation tools, such as Archivematica or DROID.
- Familiarity with metadata standards and schema, such as Dublin Core or PREMIS.
- Experience working in a remote or distributed team environment.
