We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Product Design Engineer to join our Electrical Solutions Product Engineering team, where you will play a critical role in designing and developing resilient, cost-effective electrical distribution products and systems for our rapidly expanding data center footprint.

About the Role

As a Senior Product Design Engineer for Electrical Solutions, you will be responsible for leading the design and development of new electrical power distribution equipment, including low voltage switchgear, power distribution cabinets, and LV panel boards. You will work closely with internal partner teams, including Operations, Quality, Availability, Reliability, Safety, Hardware Engineering, and Integrated Facilities, to solicit customer input and define design requirements for product design. Your expertise will be instrumental in driving continuous advancements and improvements in our designs, and you will communicate technical direction to Senior Management.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead new product design, development, and qualification of critical electrical power distribution equipment for AWS data centers, including switchgear, power distribution cabinets, transformers, and panels.
• Create designs that exceed quality requirements defined by internal quality and reliability teams while delivering a positive return on investment for the business.
• Develop Capex and Opex spending budgets, taking into account development costs with vendors, prototyping needs, testing, and specialized tooling requirements.
• Work with global suppliers and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment and components, ensuring tier 2 and 3 supply chain resiliency.
• Ensure compliance with UL, CSA, IEC, and federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes across different countries through appropriate levels of testing.
• Create design documentation packages, including submittal, 3D models, assembly shop drawings, and part drawings, as necessary for manufacturing.
• Validate design through prototype builds, pre-production builds, and first-of-kind builds, conducting DFx and value engineering analysis through each step and updating design and documentation.
• Support the Principal Engineering and Hardware Engineering teams in designing and developing cutting-edge concepts into new products.
• Ingest design documentation into AWS' Product Lifecycle Management tool and maintain design documentation through the full new product development process.
• Work with field engineering and commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical products.
• Provide support for manufacturing activities for new products on concurrent projects in multiple geographical locations.
• Support Data Center Operations, including failure mode and root cause analysis, maintenance and troubleshooting support, and operating procedure review.

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need to have a strong educational foundation in engineering, with a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field. You will also need to have at least 8 years of experience in leading new product design, development, product certification, and manufacturing support of low voltage distribution products for data center applications, with a focus on switchgear, switchboards, and panelboards.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

• Strong knowledge of electric codes, including NEC, NFPA, UL891, UL508, UL1066, UL1558, and ANSI C37.
• Experience with design documentation creation, including 3D models, submittals, assembly and part drawings, and ingestion into Product Lifecycle Manager.
• Ability to validate design through prototype builds, pre-production builds, and first-of-kind builds, conducting DFx and value engineering analysis through each step and updating design and documentation.
• Familiarity with product validation processes and experience with product certification testing by third-party labs.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal and external teams, including engineering service providers, manufacturers, vendors, inspectors, third-party testing labs, and contractors.

Industry Knowledge and Experience

• Familiarity with typical data center designs and architectures, and experience following industry design trends.
• Knowledge of international electrical product design requirements and experience working with global suppliers and manufacturers.
• Ability to travel up to 30%, including internationally, to support business needs and collaborate with global teams.
