We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Transportation Data Analyst to join our team in the Office of Transit Safety & Oversight (TSO), Office of System Safety, Safety Assurance and Risk Management Division. As a Transportation Data Analyst, you will play a critical role in analyzing data to support data-informed transit safety policies and programs. This is a direct hire opportunity, and we are looking for a talented individual to join our team and make a tangible difference in the transportation industry.

About the Role

The Transportation Data Analyst will be responsible for analyzing data from various sources, interpreting and presenting results, developing data visualizations, and collaborating with others in TSO, FTA, and USDOT to support data-informed transit safety policies and programs. This position offers a hybrid work model, combining remote work with time in our office, providing a flexible and dynamic work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the selection and application of appropriate methodologies for the analysis and interpretation of transit safety data.
  • Work collaboratively with safety risk management, safety assurance, safety data management, and other programs in TSO to support data analysis needs.
  • Understand and apply communication best practices and plain language principles to ensure communication is responsive to the purpose and easily understood by the intended audience.
  • Support inter-disciplinary, inter-office or inter-agency teams, programs, or projects in a dynamic environment, adjusting tasks and schedules as needed in response to changing priorities and management direction.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this position has experience conducting data analysis using analytical, mathematical, or statistical theories, principles, and practices. They possess strong project management and communication skills, and have an interest in performing mission-driven work to improve transit safety. The candidate should be able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, and have excellent written and oral communication skills.

Requirements:

Education:

  • Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study in accounting, business administration, business or commercial law, commerce, economics, engineering, finance, industrial management, statistics, traffic management, transportation, motor mechanics, or other fields related to the position.

Experience:

  • To qualify for the GS-09 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-07, which must include experience assisting in developing qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze data.
  • To qualify for the GS-11 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-09, which must include experience with qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze transportation data and experience applying analytical, mathematical, or statistical theories, principles, or practices.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Research: Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry.
  • Oral Communication: Expresses information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information.
  • Written Communication: Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.
  • Project Management: Knowledge of the principles, methods, or tools for developing, scheduling, coordinating, and managing projects and resources.
