Key Responsibilities

As a Sign Language Interpreter in the Anaheim Union High School District, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing interpreting and translating services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in various settings, including classrooms, assemblies, and parent conferences
  • Translating instructional materials, directions, and communications for students using manual and oral communication techniques
  • Assisting students with study activities, individual education plans, and other academic support
  • Maintaining accurate records and reports related to assigned activities and students
  • Participating in parent conferences, IEP meetings, and other events as requested
  • Collaborating with teachers and staff to ensure that students receive equal access to education
  • Operating instructional and office equipment, including audio and video equipment
  • Providing support to students with physical needs, such as feeding, toileting, and transferring

Requirements and Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must possess the following qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by demonstrated training or college-level coursework in sign language, or an associate degree
  • Two years of experience performing interpreting and translating functions for the hearing impaired, including some experience in classroom situations or at public meetings
  • Possession of a valid certificate with a score of level 4.0 or higher, issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or equivalent certificate issued by a recognized evaluating agency
  • Demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics at or exceeding that required for high school seniors
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and staff
  • Strong knowledge of sign language, including fingerspelling and signed English
  • Ability to translate language into visual signs utilizing oral communication, fingerspelling, sign language, and other manual communication techniques

Preferred Qualifications

We prefer candidates who possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as education, communication, or linguistics
  • Experience working with deaf and hard-of-hearing students in an educational setting
  • Knowledge of child growth and development, and developmental behavior characteristics of the hearing impaired
  • Experience with curriculum development and implementation
  • Certification in a related field, such as special education or speech therapy
