Now, we're looking for a highly skilled and experienced Director - Government Affairs & Tech Policy to join our Global Public Policy (GPP) team.

About the Role

The Director - Government Affairs & Tech Policy is a critical leadership role that advises Walmart's leadership on public policy issues related to technology, e-commerce, and digital innovation. As a subject matter expert, you will analyze complex public policy issues, develop strategic plans, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to shape Walmart's policy priorities. Your expertise will help us navigate the ever-changing landscape of technology and public policy, ensuring that our company remains a leader in the industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Public Policy Leadership: Provide leadership in defined public policy areas, using your subject matter expertise to advise Walmart's business leaders and shape strategic priorities.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and execute strategic plans to address Walmart's public policy priorities, working closely with internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and manage relationships with external trade and industry associations, NGOs, public policy experts, and other stakeholders to advance Walmart's policy priorities.
  • Public Policy Research: Engage in public policy research with internal and external partners to inform Walmart's policy positions and responses to external factors.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with colleagues, business partners, policymakers, and the general public, working closely with Walmart's government affairs and communications teams.
  • Monitoring and Analysis: Monitor and analyze legislation, regulatory activity, and other government-led initiatives that could impact Walmart, its associates, or customers.

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • 8+ years of applied public policy experience in government affairs, advocacy, or related fields, with a demonstrated track record of success.
  • A Bachelor's degree in government/political science, economics, international affairs, business, or a related field.
  • Deep understanding of policymaking processes at the state/local, federal, and/or global level, and how to leverage private sector influence in those processes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to think critically and act decisively, with a strong sense of judgment and a willingness to take calculated risks.

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Experience in tech policy, including e-commerce, data privacy and security, biometrics, and immersive technology.
  • Familiarity with competition policy and intellectual property protections, as well as the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in business applications.
  • Corporate experience in government affairs or public policy, with a proven track record of success.
  • Experience working in matrixed environments, with the ability to navigate complex organizations and spark collaboration across teams and departments.

  • Competitive pay, with an annual salary range of $110,000 - $220,000.
