About the Athletics Academic Services Department
The Athletics Academic Services (AAS) department at California State University, Fullerton is dedicated to providing effective life skills and academic support services to over 400 Division I Varsity NCAA student-athletes. The department's mission is to encourage timely graduation and ensure that student-athletes receive the information they need to be in compliance with institutional and NCAA rules governing continuing eligibility. As a key member of the AAS team, you will play a critical role in supporting the academic success and personal development of student-athletes.
Job Summary
We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as an Athletics Academic Services Counselor (Student Services Professional III). The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, an active and energetic mind, and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. Under the supervision of the Director of Athletics Academic Services, the Athletics Academic Services Counselor will provide comprehensive complex academic advisement, counseling, and proactive monitoring to student-athletes in assigned sports, in accordance with institutional and NCAA guidelines, rules, and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide academic advisement and counseling to student-athletes in assigned sports, including early warning grade checks and follow-up with faculty and coaching staff as appropriate
- Participate in Senior Recognition, Welcome Back, FACE, Student-Athlete Orientation meetings, and other recognition programs
- Develop and teach NCAA life skills and other workshops/seminars, and assist with special projects and initiatives as assigned
- Plan and develop creative solutions with integrative approaches across organization lines, dealing with complex and sensitive issues in reference to interpretations of NCAA rules and regulations
- Use independent judgment in addressing complex problems as appropriate, developing solutions to individual student problems and assisting students in identifying their problems, thinking them through, evaluating them realistically, and implementing corrective measures to alleviate skills deficiencies
- Serve as the admissions coordinator for student-athletes, conducting unofficial evaluations, working closely with the Athletics Compliance office, Admissions, coaches, and prospective student-athletes
- Coordinate and provide information on prospective student-athletes for the Exception Admits Committee
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution, plus three years of professional student services work in the field
- A master's degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience
- A doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for three years of the required professional experience
- Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities
- Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public
- Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action
- Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters
- Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals
- Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and the overall organization
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a job-related field
- Prior experience in intercollegiate athletics
- Knowledge of NCAA regulations and policies
- Possession of the skills and abilities necessary to assess student-athlete academic needs and requirements related to NCAA regulations
- Team-oriented, student-centered, and flexible individual who can work in a fast-paced environment

The salary range for this position is $5,025 - $7,159 per month, depending on qualifications and experience.
