We're now seeking a talented and motivated Teaching Artist to lead our Studio Art programs in Flushing, Queens, NY.
About the Role
As a Teaching Artist - Studio Art, you will have the opportunity to inspire and educate boys aged 6-12 years old in a fun and engaging environment. You'll lead classes of four to twenty students, using various fine art techniques and materials to promote creativity, skill-building, and self-expression. Our ideal candidate is reliable, highly motivated, and passionate about working with youth.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and practice in Studio Art, including sculpture, painting, illustration, graphic design, and i-movie.
- Teach lessons using diverse fine art techniques and materials, adapting to the needs and abilities of our members.
- Assist with daily set-up, clean-up, and transportation, ensuring a safe and organized learning environment.
- Model and enforce adherence to sound health and safety practices, promoting a positive and respectful atmosphere.
- Engage with members, using proactive strategies to preemptively defuse inappropriate behavior and encourage positive interactions.
- Prepare and administer written, oral, and performance assessments to determine progress and identify areas for improvement.
- Review instructional content, methods, and student performance to assess strengths and weaknesses, and develop recommendations for curriculum revision, development, or elimination.
- Complete and submit program reports, including supply requests, lesson plans, and timesheets, in a timely and accurate manner.
- Ensure proper care of all area materials, organizing the room and reporting any misused or damaged materials to the department director.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you should possess:
- Previous experience in youth development, education, or afterschool settings.
- An Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Junior level or higher preferred.
- Experience with multiple computer programs and software, such as Photoshop, Acrobat, InDesign, Premiere Pro, and After Effects.
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment and address the varying needs of our members.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- DOH and DOE fingerprinting.
- First Aid and CPR Certification.
- Advanced knowledge of Computer graphics, Web design, Animation, and Online search skills.
- Experience working with economically and educationally disadvantaged youth, with a sound understanding of the social and cultural issues facing urban families.
