Job Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Retention Peer Mentor to join our team in the Moyes College of Education. As a Retention Peer Mentor, you will play a vital role in supporting the success of our students, particularly those from historically underrepresented groups. You will be responsible for providing guidance, support, and resources to help students navigate the challenges of higher education, achieve their academic goals, and develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in their chosen careers.
Key Responsibilities
- Visit schools and other locations for recruitment, promoting WSU's programs and services to prospective students
- Offer assistance and a listening ear to Moyes College of Education students, providing broad support and targeted outreach as needed
- Develop, moderate, and lead participation in bi-weekly meetings/programs focused on topics such as navigating campus resources, developing connections to campus and community, and preparing for graduation and beyond
- Staff the MORE center, providing a welcoming and supportive environment for students to seek help and guidance
- Facilitate effective one-on-one and small group mentoring meetings, helping students to set and achieve their academic and personal goals
- Coordinate relevant workshops and events, promoting student engagement and success
- Demonstrate professionalism, organization, excellent communication and listening skills, responsibility, accountability, integrity, and a desire to learn, grow, and develop as a leader
Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must meet the following minimum requirements:
- 2.5 GPA or higher
- Full-time student (12 credits or more) in the Moyes College of Education, working towards your first degree
- Completion of at least one semester at WSU by the end of Fall 2021
- Demonstrated ability or desire to work effectively with historically underrepresented students
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Autonomous and proactive, with Google Suite expertise and Gmail experience
Preferred qualifications include:
- 3.0 GPA or higher, eligible for CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) certification
- Work study experience, with a completed FAFSA
- Participation in concurrent enrollment programs
- Experience working with diverse populations, mentoring, and/or motivating others
- Teamwork and team-oriented background
Skills and Competencies
To succeed in this role, you will need to possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. You must be able to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds, providing support and guidance that is tailored to their individual needs. You should be proactive, autonomous, and able to work independently, with a strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration. Additionally, you should be proficient in Google Suite and have experience with Gmail.
