We're now seeking an Experienced English Language Learners Tutor to join our team and help non-native English speakers thrive in our schools.

About the Role

The English Language Learners Tutor plays a vital role in supporting students who are non-English speaking or have Limited English Proficiency (LEP). This hybrid role allows you to balance your time between our remote office and home, providing flexibility and work-life balance. As a tutor, you'll work closely with classroom teachers to develop individualized plans, provide tutorial sessions, and maintain accurate records to ensure students meet their academic goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides tutorial sessions to non-English speaking and LEP students on an individual or small group basis to improve their understanding of concepts being taught in the regular classroom.
  • Develops individual tutorial plans for students as necessary, in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
  • Completes English Language Learners Program identification and assessment reports, maintaining accurate records and attendance.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers to determine the needs of referred students, particularly ESL needs, and develops plans to meet applicable goals.
  • Schedules and/or attends conferences, in-service training programs, and acts as a liaison or interpreter/translator between the school, teachers, students, and parents when necessary.
  • Introduces pertinent information to LEP students and classroom teachers about multicultural awareness issues, promoting a culture of inclusivity.

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • To meet paraprofessional requirements for the state of Alaska through one of the following methods:
    • 48 college semester credits from a regionally accredited institution.
    • A passing score of 459 or greater on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment exam.
    • Passing the WorkKeys by ACT assessment.
    • Passing the ASD provided Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation among staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.

Preferred Qualifications

While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Knowledge of first aid.
  • College coursework in education.
  • Experience and training in working with children in an instructional environment, preferably within a bilingual setting.
  • Fluency in English and at least one other language.
  • Training and experience in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs.

Compensation, Perks, and Benefits

We offer a competitive hourly rate of $16.54 - $17.46, with a 2% increase to your base hourly pay rate once you've met the state of Alaska qualification for paraprofessionals. Our benefits package includes a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
