About Shields Health Solutions – Pioneering Specialty Pharmacy Integration

At Shields Health Solutions, we are proud to be the nation’s first and largest hospital‑owned specialty pharmacy integrator. Our mission is to empower health systems across the United States to build, launch, and operate high‑impact specialty pharmacy programs that combine scientific expertise, compassionate patient care, and sound financial stewardship. Partnering with more than 40 leading health systems, we have created a proven, low‑risk model that eliminates the traditional barriers of cost, execution, and organizational complexity. By leveraging advanced technology platforms, deep clinical knowledge, and a culture of relentless improvement, we make specialty medication access seamless for clinicians, patients, and payors alike.

Position Overview – Why This Role Matters

We are seeking a dynamic, patient‑focused professional to join our remote team as a Patient Support Advocate and Certified Pharmacy Technician. In this hybrid, work‑from‑home role, you will be the critical bridge between patients, insurance providers, prescribing clinicians, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. Your expertise will directly influence medication adherence, reduce financial burden, and accelerate the delivery of life‑changing therapies. If you thrive in a fast‑paced environment, possess strong communication skills, and are passionate about removing obstacles to care, this is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while advancing your career in specialty pharmacy.

Key Responsibilities – What You’ll Do Every Day

  • Insurance Navigation & Prior Authorization: Initiate, track, and expedite prior authorizations with health plans, ensuring timely approval of high‑cost specialty medications.
  • Financial Assistance Coordination: Research and secure patient‑specific funding options—including manufacturer copay assistance, foundation grants, and charitable programs—to reduce out‑of‑pocket expenses.
  • Pharmacy System Management: Operate specialty pharmacy dispensing platforms (e.g., Willow, QS1, Rx30) to adjudicate claims, verify prescription details, and generate accurate refill orders.
  • Patient Communication: Provide empathetic, phone‑based support, guiding patients through medication regimens, scheduling refills, and addressing compliance concerns.
  • Clinical Collaboration: Partner with pharmacists, pharmacy liaisons, and prescribing clinicians to confirm therapy appropriateness and resolve medication‑related issues.
  • Documentation & Data Integrity: Maintain comprehensive records in electronic medical records (EMR), pharmacy databases, and email logs, documenting every interaction, authorization status, and financial assistance outcome.
  • Trend Analysis & Process Improvement: Identify recurring barriers, suggest workflow enhancements, and participate in continuous‑quality initiatives to boost efficiency and patient satisfaction.
  • Confidentiality & Compliance: Safeguard all protected health information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA and internal security policies.
  • Education & Knowledge Development: Pursue ongoing learning through webinars, industry publications, and professional networks to stay current on specialty drug developments, insurance policies, and regulatory updates.
  • Travel (Optional): Occasionally support onsite events or training sessions, with minimal out‑of‑state travel as required.
  • Additional Duties: Perform any other tasks assigned that support the overall mission of Shields Health Solutions.

Essential Qualifications – What You Must Bring

  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a pharmacy technician in a specialty, retail, or hospital setting.
  • Active, unencumbered pharmacy technician licensure or national certification (e.g., PTCE, NPT, or CPhT). Candidates lacking certification at hire must obtain it within six months of employment.
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree in a health‑related field considered a plus.
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills with a proven ability to convey complex information clearly over the phone.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel (data analysis, reporting) and Word (documentation).
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and navigate pharmacy software platforms; experience with Willow, QS1, or Rx30 is highly desired.
  • Strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining accurate, up‑to‑date records.
  • High integrity, reliability, and a customer‑service mindset; ability to handle confidential patient data with discretion.
  • Empathetic listening and interpersonal skills that foster trust with patients facing difficult health and financial challenges.

Preferred Qualifications – What Sets You Apart

  • Previous experience in prior‑authorization processes or financial assistance program coordination.
  • Certification in specialty pharmacy practice or related continuing education (e.g., Board Certified Specialty Pharmacist – BCSPh).
  • Familiarity with health‑system EMR systems (Epic, Cerner) and integrated pharmacy workflow tools.
  • Experience working in a fully remote or hybrid environment, demonstrating self‑motivation and effective time management.
  • Multilingual abilities to serve diverse patient populations.

Core Skills & Competencies – Tools for Success

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to assess insurance policies, interpret clinical data, and determine the most efficient path to medication access.
  • Problem Solving: Proactively identify roadblocks and develop creative, patient‑centric solutions.
  • Team Collaboration: Work seamlessly with pharmacists, clinicians, and support staff across time zones.
  • Technology Literacy: Comfort with cloud‑based platforms, data entry interfaces, and virtual communication tools (Zoom, Teams).
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of HIPAA, state pharmacy regulations, and specialty drug compliance standards.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Sensitivity to patients’ emotional states, fostering a supportive and reassuring interaction.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

Shields Health Solutions is committed to developing talent from within. As a Patient Support Advocate & Pharmacy Technician, you will have access to:

  • Structured mentorship programs pairing you with senior pharmacy leaders.
  • Tuition reimbursement for advanced certifications (e.g., Certified Specialty Pharmacy Technician).
  • Regular internal webinars on emerging specialty therapies, insurance trends, and best‑practice case studies.
  • Opportunities to move into advanced clinical roles, such as Specialty Pharmacy Coordinator, Clinical Operations Analyst, or Remote Pharmacy Manager.
  • Cross‑functional project assignments that broaden your skill set beyond traditional pharmacy duties.
