Paralegal - Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project
Bet Tzedek Legal Services has been providing high-quality, free legal services to Los Angeles’ most vulnerable residents for nearly 50 years. They are seeking a paralegal to join their Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project, where the role involves providing legal services and support to housed and unhoused individuals in collaboration with service providers.
Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of an attorney, respond to phone and email requests for legal assistance and deliver advice and counsel
- Prepare, file, and serve court forms and case documents with attorney supervision
- Assist attorneys during discovery by conducting document review and preparing, responding to, and serving discovery devices
- Conduct and assist with outreach, in-person intakes, and education efforts to various homeless service providers, unhoused individuals, and individuals at imminent risk of homelessness (local travel required)
- Perform administrative tasks with organization and efficiency, including typing client interview notes, entering client information into a case management database, uploading relevant documents to document management databases, entering data into a template referrals spreadsheet, on a monthly basis; completing biweekly timesheets, opening and closing digital case files timely and accurately; and
- Other assignments as deemed appropriate
Skills
- A paralegal certificate/degree in paralegal studies from an ABA-approved institution OR bachelor's degree and at least 1 year of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the California bar for the preceding 3 years
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Proficiency with internet and web-based applications
- Ability to travel independently throughout Los Angeles County for required client work and outreach and education events
- Demonstrated commitment to Bet Tzedek's mission to provide free legal services to those who need them most
- Demonstrated commitment to applying principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in performance of job duties
- Fluency in written and spoken Spanish and ability to translate between English and Spanish
- At least 2 years of law office experience supporting multiple attorneys
- Knowledge and experience in landlord-tenant law or similar practice areas related to housing or homelessness
- Proficiency with MS Office, electronic case management and document management systems (Legal Server, Net Documents, Adobe Pro, OneLegal)
- Valid California driver's license
