Technica Editorial is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Freelance Editorial Assistant to join our team. This role supports our editorial peer review staff by ensuring a smooth, efficient intake process for the wide variety of academic journals we manage. The main duties will include checking manuscripts before they go to peer review as well as assisting our editorial staff as needed. Our clients include leading scientific and academic publishers.
The ideal candidate should be interested in learning about the publication process. Candidates should be able to adapt to change, handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, treat clients and colleagues professionally, and work equally well as a member of the administrative team or independently in a deadline-oriented environment.
The hours will total 20-25 hours/week, approximately 9 am - 2 pm
Technica Editorial provides editorial production and peer review support, training, and consultation to publishing partners in the scientific/scholarly community. Technica Editorial has a unique understanding of the complete editorial management process, from manuscript submission to print and electronic publication of books, journals, and magazines. Our offices are located in the lovely town of Carrboro, North Carolina — within strolling distance of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Duties
• Assessment of submitted manuscripts, adhering to journal style guidelines, sending queries to authors, and completing checklist tasks.
• Help with various tasks, including collecting copyright and permission forms.
• Work closely and proactively with project teams. Ensure that all are fully informed and in agreement with manuscript processes.
Requirements:
Experience: College degree. Prior experience in academic publishing is preferred.
Attention to Detail: An eagle eye for typos, formatting inconsistencies, and missing documentation.
Technical Proficiency: Comfort learning new software; experience with peer-review management systems is a major plus. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
Reliability: Ability to manage a consistent 25-hour weekly schedule and meet tight deadlines. Work independently and be flexible and able to deal effectively with change.
Communication: Excellent written English skills for professional correspondence with global researchers.
