Staff Accountant

They are looking for a Staff Accountant to join their team, where the role involves delivering client services, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to professional development while ensuring compliance with accounting standards.
Responsibilities
- Complete various Audit, Review, and Compilation engagements individually and as part of a team
- Review client accounting and financial records for accuracy and compliance with accounting standards, procedures, and internal controls
- Perform technical work in the office or in the field on assigned engagements or portions of engagements, under supervision
- Support complex areas of larger audit and review engagements
- Maintain responsibility for accuracy and completion of assigned work and related documentation
- Prepare draft review plans for supervisory assessment when leading an engagement
- Prepare individual and corporate tax returns, including HST returns
- Cooperate with colleagues and management on file and engagement planning
- Address engagement issues by consulting appropriate resources and escalate relevant matters to the engagement supervisor when necessary
- Respond to client needs and address concerns proactively
- Complete assignments within set timelines, budget, and specifications
- Demonstrate familiarity with the client and their industry
- Provide reliable service to clients by responding promptly and maintaining accountability, integrity, and respect
- Assist with business development and goodwill efforts as required
- Identify prospects for additional products or services for existing clients and communicate these to the engagement supervisor
- Train and guide junior accountants and co-op students to support their development
- Give prompt, direct feedback to less experienced team members
- Oversee work performed by junior staff to reduce the need for extensive review by engagement supervisors
- Monitor the progress of all assigned engagements, including delegated tasks
- Contribute to project teams implementing firm policies and initiatives when requested
- Identify inefficient processes and suggest improvements
- Acquire knowledge of support systems, including tax software, computer systems, and firm standards
- Build experience in public accounting and work towards professional certification
- Meet individual profitability targets, business development, and career objectives
- Participate in activities to enhance engagement profitability
- Understand the firm's structure, operational processes, and financial factors
- Develop communication skills for effective interaction with colleagues and clients
- Collaborate across different teams within the firm
- Remain informed about current accounting practices and pursue opportunities to improve organizational efficiency and effectiveness
Skills
- Postsecondary diploma or degree in accounting or related fields
- 1+ years' experience in an accounting role at a public accounting firm required
- Sound knowledge of Canadian Audit and Accounting Standards (CAS, ASPE, ASNPO, CSRE 2400 and CSRS 4200), income tax, payroll tax and HST
- Ability to take initiative for own learning and development
- Interest in developing others
- Ability to prioritize and manage deliverables, adhering to time and budget constraints
- Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
- Pursuit of CPA designation an asset
