Job description: The Remote Technician plays a vital role in conducting subjective refractions remotely for patients. This role ensures precise data collection to support Doctors of Optometry in providing accurate and comprehensive eye exams.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts subjective remote refractions for patients across the U.S. and Canada, ensuring precision and adherence to clinical standards.
- Guides patients through the exam process, explaining procedures clearly to ensure comfort and understanding.
- Provides precise and accurate data to Doctors of Optometry for comprehensive eye exams.
- Participates in regular feedback sessions, team meetings and ongoing training to maintain quality standards.
- Achieves the required number of exams per hour as set by the company to ensure operational efficiency.
- Availability to work on Saturdays are mandatory for this position. Additional hours may be required based of business needs.
- Performs additional duties as assigned, as this list does not reflect all the duties and responsibilities of the Ophthalmic Technician.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues during virtual sessions, address patient concerns and resolve clinical questions efficiently.
- Precision in conducting subjective refractions, entering patient data and providing accurate information to Doctors of Optometry for exams
- Ability to effectively communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, doctors and team members, both verbally and in writing, ensuring clear instructions and information.
- Provides exceptional service to patients, ensuring they feel comfortable, understood and valued during virtual consultations.
- Ability to manage multiple virtual sessions per day, prioritize tasks and meet productivity goals (e.g. exams per hour) without compromising quality.
- Ability to manage various patient needs and technical challenges while maintaining professionalism in a remote setting.
- Self-motivated with the ability to conduct remote refractions and handle patient interactions autonomously, adhering to company standards and clinical protocols.
- Comfortable using video conferencing platforms, remote refraction tools and electronic medical record systems.
- Ability to manage patient information discreetly and maintain professionalism during virtual consultations.
- Possess a strong commitment to a team environment while working well with others, which includes treating doctors, clients, employees and anyone else necessary with respect and dignity.
- Skilled in performing subjective refractions using Minus Cylinder and other techniques to provide accurate data for eye exams.
- Ability to use specialized refraction equipment, video conferencing platforms (e.g. Google Meet) and electronic health record (EHR) systems effectively in a virtual environment.
- Proficient in documenting patient information accurately in EMR systems and enduring all data is up to date and compliant with regulatory requirements.
- Able to quickly resolve technical issues, such as connectivity problems or equipment malfunctions, ensuring smooth virtual exams.
- Capable of explaining the refraction process in a way that patients with varying levels of understanding can follow and feel comfortable.
- Understanding of eye care and optometry terminology to ensure precise communication with doctors and accurate documentation.
- Ability to navigate challenges specific to remote work such as technical issues, maintaining a professional presence on camera and managing patient interactions from a distance.
- Strict adherence to HIPAA, and other healthcare privacy regulations, while managing patient data and interacting with patients remotely.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel).
- Available to work every Saturday, which is a mandatory workday.
- High School diploma, or equivalent.
- Additional relevant certifications in healthcare or technology-related fields may be considered in lieu of degree.
- At least 1+ years of professional experience performing subjective refractions on patients or in a similar technician role.
- Refraction experience in Minus Cylinder is a plus.
- Experience in remote healthcare settings or telemedicine is a plus.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) and video conferencing tools is preferred,
- Works primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
- Access to a fast and reliable hardwired internet connection with a minimum of 10 Mbps upload and 10 Mbps download
- An approved quiet, professional work area free of distractions.
- This role requires being on camera during all virtual sessions to ensure high-quality service and patient interactions.
- Overtime may be required to meet clients' needs.
- Must be able to concentrate with various interruptions, weather conditions, and noise levels.
- Ability to communicate effectively (speak and hear) and perform tasks requiring use of hands and fingers.
- Ability to remain seated for extended periods, up to 8+ hours a day, with standard breaks provided in accordance with company policy and applicable state regulations.
