About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated HIM Coding Quality Analyst to join our team remotely in California. Reporting to the Director of Health Information Management (HIM), you will perform coding quality audits on inpatient and outpatient medical records to ensure accurate and compliant code assignments following CMS guidelines. Your insights will help drive educational improvements and ensure coding integrity across our facility.
What You’ll Do
• Perform routine coding quality audits to ensure accurate code assignment, sequencing, POA, and DRG coding.
• Conduct pre-bill reviews, especially for new coders, to maintain high coding accuracy.
• Collaborate with physicians and coders by initiating queries when documentation is unclear or incomplete.
• Monitor adherence to coding guidelines, manuals, and policies.
• Stay up-to-date with coding regulations and reimbursement rules to optimize revenue cycle management.
• Review third-party payer denials, develop corrective actions, and support educational initiatives to reduce denials.
• Prepare detailed reports on coding audit findings.
• Track, trend, and communicate coding errors to coding staff.
• Develop and lead training programs to improve coding accuracy and documentation.
• Respond promptly (within 48 hours) to all internal and external coding inquiries.
• Participate in emergency and disaster response activities as required by the California Emergency Services Act.
Who You Are
• Minimum 5 years coding experience in an acute care setting, proficient with ICD-9-CM, ICD-10, CPT, and DRG coding.
• At least 1 year of coding audit experience or equivalent.
• Extensive knowledge of CMS guidelines, federal/state payer regulations, and medical terminology.
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician Based (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or equivalent certification required.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and typing speed of 40-50 WPM.
• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively under pressure with multiple deadlines.
• Able to work scheduled hours including holidays, nights, weekends, and participate in emergency response when required.
• Must reside in California to qualify for this remote position.
Education & Certifications
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Approved coding certification (CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or equivalent) required.
