Educational Writer to Develop K–12 Community Study UbD (Kinder, 6th, and 11th Grade ELA/Civics)
Job Description:
I'm seeking an experienced educational writer or curriculum designer to help create three grade-specific versions (Kindergarten, 6th Grade, and 11th Grade) of a neighborhood or community study unit.
This unit is designed to help educators integrate student identity, place-based learning, and culturally responsive pedagogy into academic instruction.
The final product will also include adaptations for school counselors, social workers, and restorative circle facilitators.
This project supports a book-in-progress aimed at helping educators design responsive, inclusive academics that affirm all students, particularly adopted, looked-after, and loss-affected (ALA) children.
Your writing will contribute directly to an appendix for the manuscript, offering ready-to-use guidance and examples across developmental levels.
✅ Scope of Work:
Draft 3 developmentally appropriate versions of a community or neighborhood study unit using the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework, which emphasizes planning with the end in mind. Each unit should follow the UbD backward design process, beginning with clearly articulated learning goals and culminating in authentic, meaningful assessment tasks.
-Kindergarten
-6th Grade
-11th Grade
Each version should be built using the UbD unit planning template, available here: UbD Template PDF (ASCD) (https://www.ascd.org/ASCD/pdf/siteASCD/publications/UbD_WhitePaper0312.pdf)
Each unit should include:
-Stage 1: Desired Results (Enduring understandings, essential questions, standards alignment)
-Stage 2: Evidence of Learning (Performance tasks and other assessments)
-Stage 3: Learning Plan (Learning experiences, instructional strategies, and differentiation)
The unit should also reflect:
-Inquiry-based guiding questions
-Opportunities for student identity development and community exploration
-Integration of literacy, social studies, and civic learning standards
-Optional adaptations for school counselors, social workers, and circle-keepers
