This is a fully remote, contract-based role. Tutors may be located anywhere, as long as they are dependable, communicative, and committed to nurturing student growth. Outstanding candidates may also be considered for other roles on our platform.
About Modulo
Modulo is an educational support platform for homeschoolers and families building personalized learning paths outside traditional school models. Many of our learners are gifted, neurodivergent, or thrive in flexible, interest-led environments. Families seek tutors who can support language learning through engaging dialogue, cultural context, and practical use.
About You
• You are highly proficient in Afrikaans and able to communicate clearly in English when needed. Preference is given to those with native-level fluency or near-native use—especially beneficial for immersive instruction—though all qualified candidates are welcome.
• You use immersion-based techniques: conducting lessons primarily in Afrikaans, introducing new vocabulary and grammar through context, story, visuals, songs, or role play rather than translation .
• You integrate cultural content—such as Afrikaanse songs, stories, cartoons, or role-playing activities—to enrich learning and make it meaningful and relatable .
• You encourage regular listening and speaking practice, using multimedia resources like music, videos, and children’s programs to support pronunciation and habit‑formation .
• You use content-based instruction (CLIL-style): teaching cultural or everyday topics through the language, allowing students to learn Afrikaans in context rather than in isolation .
• You help students build pragmatic competence—practicing conversational structures, polite forms, intonation, gestures, and context-appropriate utterances, not just vocabulary and grammar rules .
• You foster learner autonomy: encouraging self‑regulated practice, goal-setting, and application beyond sessions—often using language apps, immersion at home, or multimedia support .
• You are sensitive to student needs and developmental levels. You adapt lessons for younger or older learners in ways that support natural language development—whether through play, story, visuals, or structured dialogues.
Responsibilities
• Conduct one-on-one online lessons primarily in Afrikaans, using immersive methods that build natural comprehension and output.
• Design activities around real-world topics: everyday routines, cultural practices, storytelling, songs, or short dialogues.
• Integrate multimedia—songs, rhymes, cartoons, or short stories—to reinforce listening, pronunciation, and vocabulary naturally.
• Use role-play or simulations (e.g. at a market, mealtime, greetings) to engage learners dynamically and contextually.
• Support students in developing conversational skills: turn-taking, question-answer patterns, polite phrases, and cultural nuance.
• Use visuals, props, or interactive tools to anchor new language forms without translation.
• Encourage at-home immersion: practice routines, media, labeling household items, or switching device languages to Afrikaans.
• Build learner strategies: self-assessment, spaced practice, reflection prompts, or digital tools to deepen learning beyond sessions.
• Communicate regularly with families about progress, goals, and strategies for continued immersion at home.
Qualifications
• Fluent or near-native proficiency in Afrikaans, with strong comprehension and spoken clarity.
• Experience tutoring or teaching Afrikaans, preferably with children or teens, online or in-person.
• Familiarity with immersion-based language teaching methods, CLIL strategies, and developmentally appropriate practices.
• Ability to incorporate multimedia, cultural context, and interactive exercises into lessons.
• Comfortable working with diverse learners, including gifted or neurodivergent students, and adapting your approach accordingly.
• Excellent communication skills in English, organized and professional in working with families.
What Makes a Tutor Stand Out at Modulo
• Exceptional tutors go beyond grammar drills. They:
• Create immersive Afrikaans environments where learners think and speak in the language from early on
• Use songs, stories, role-play, and cultural content to embed vocabulary and structure naturally
• Support conversation as living communication—not just correct sentences
• Encourage practical immersion beyond lessons: at home, through media, or daily routines
• Help students build autonomy, curiosity, and pride in using Afrikaans
• Celebrate progress and cultural curiosity in meaningful ways
Student Ages and Matching
Our learners range from upper elementary through high school and early college. Tutors will be matched based on their expertise, preferred age group(s), and teaching approach. You are never expected to teach all age levels—rather we aim to align age-appropriate methods and tutor strengths.
Schedule
Tutors set their own availability. Families are matched based on your age-group preference, teaching strengths, and schedule. Tutors may be matched with one or more students depending on demand.
