About the position
Responsibilities
• Plan, manage, and supervise the editorial and engagement vision of the Public Matters Democracy team.
• Develop key performance indicators to measure progress and use data to inform decisions.
• Direct digital and community engagement efforts surrounding democracy and civic engagement.
• Ensure the Democracy Investigative Reporter and Democracy Social Media Host produce a steady stream of content with a digital-first orientation.
• Collaborate with the Director of Grants and Engagement to amplify the project.
• Manage the team's long-term schedule and relationships with Public Matters Initiative partners.
• Collaborate with the News Director, Managing Editor, Digital Editor, and reporters to develop story ideas and engagement projects.
• Encourage enterprise reporting and help hone pitches for stories that match the KPBS news mission.
• Ensure writing is focused and conversational, and that audio and video for broadcast stories move the narrative forward.
• Help reporters write with style and word economy and adapt stories creatively for the web.
• Contribute to daily news meetings and ensure coverage of top democracy and civic engagement stories in the region.
• Actively participate in required meetings and represent KPBS at public meetings.
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in journalism or media management.
• Strong understanding of democracy and civic engagement issues.
• Proven ability to manage and lead a team effectively.
• Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills.
• Experience with digital media and audience engagement strategies.
• Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners.
Nice-to-haves
• Experience in public media or nonprofit journalism.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish.
• Familiarity with community engagement practices and strategies.
• Knowledge of the San Diego and Imperial County communities.
