Physical Therapist Mentor - help finalize Women's Over 40 Strength Training Program Design
I am about 2/3 of the way in to a structured video home strength training program for women over 40 that I'm filming. I have been collaborating with a physical therapist and exercise physiologist on the design of the program for the past 5 years. Sadly, my mentoring PT is facing a life threatening health condition that requires them to focus on treatment and I must replace her.
I'm looking for a PT that has a level of experience and feeling of ease related to helping me finish up the design/choreography of some yoga-type flows that will be used during some deload periods of the program, help with writing or reviewing appropriate voiceover wording, as well as someone I can just ask questions related to what the best options are when it comes to reviewing the various exercises I have in the program and then seeing what would be good to address from a muscular/joint/fascia perspective to help create harmony and balance in what's left to fill in for the design.
Just to clarify, the exercises & layout of the entire 2 year strength training program are already done. What is left is things like some yoga-type flows to choreograph during deload periods and choices with voiceover wording etc, that you would help with after reviewing the types of exercises/training of what muscles/how joints have been worked etc over a period of time to decide what else will pair well that as well as just me being able to ask physical therapy/fitness/how the body works questions as I develop my marketing wording/write how I will educate my audience etc. In general I don't see this being more than a few hours a week. Sometimes it might be a bit more, and other times there will be weeks of nothing/zero.
This is a very collaborative working relationship. In some cases I may ask you to design/suggest an actual flow of stretches for instance, I would then review and we can have conversation if there's other things I think of that I want that might need adjustment, and in some cases I will think of things and ask for your feedback/review as to it's appropriateness/suggestions for improving if needed based on your expertise. I have always wanted to understand the why behind a certain suggestion or caution, so a lot of the interaction with my previous mentoring PT was in her writing out detailed explanations of how the body works/etc so that I could understand for myself and then make decisions based on that.
We pretty much do all communication through email, google docs, and Asana. I also make videos on occasion to more easily explain my questions that you'd watch and then you could either type a reply or make a video back.
It's just me and my VA working on this for the most part, and I have some energy limitations, as well as many aspects of the program I have to work on that don't require your help (ie filming the workouts, editing videos etc), so the timing of the work is very free-flowing.
I don't have specific structured deadlines in general, so I respect your own life/time with your other responsibilities to get back to me when you can, but at the same time, I need someone who feels they have the availability/mental space to be able to reply to questions and ideas in a somewhat expedient fashion so that I can keep moving forward to some degree on a consistent basis without losing my momentum, if that makes sense. If I have to wait, a week say, for a reply to a question, that can really slow down my ability to make the next decision and keep moving forward. Sometimes there will be a lot more back and forth as I am in the middle of deciding/creating the next thing for this program, and sometimes it will be pretty dry/no need for communication as I work on other aspects of the program that doesn't require your help.
To give you a little more detail about the type of program I'm creating, this is meant to be a more calm/chill workout experience- I sometimes call it the yoga of strength training. I have chosen the exercises and order of exercises in workouts to conserve energy/not be overly systemically fatiguing. Thus we have SOME compound movements spread out in a workout, but a much higher ratio of isolation movements that are less tiring to execute. My goal for this program is not to "get shredded" or do crazy intense stuff. Here are some of the goals of my program:
1. Doable training that allows one to have a long term habit of strength training at home that one can stay consistent with
2. Focus on building muscle
3. I chose the training and progression of exercises with the idea of addressing common muscle imbalances for our society today (chosen through original mentorship of my other PT)
4. A workout experience that feels more life "me-time" and self-care, so that a person looks forward to it.
5. Suited for women who have some energy/fatigue issues that still want to strength train without feeling horrible for days after their workout, and/or
6. Women who are trying to experience more calm in their lives/calm their nervous system down.
7. For beginners who don't feel confident or capable with strength training/feel intimidated - every movement that is added to the workout rotation has a video how-to and common mistakes tutorial that I made to break down how to do the movement with good form first.
8. Longer than usual recovery times - same muscles are not worked again for at least 72 hours. The workout pattern is 1 workout with a certain order of exercises is say, M/F, a 2nd workout with different exercises working different muscle groups would be scheduled for W/the following M. It alternates.
9. There is a high ratio of isolation style exercises- again this is in part due to the reduction in systemic fatigue it provides for people like myself that have chronic energy issues.
10. Kind of the idea is to do the least possible that gets you 85% of the results type approach.
11. Part of my marketing approach is to appeal to women over 40 who are more interested in maintaining their mobility and ability as they get older, retaining bone mass and muscle mass and just generally more from a being healthy & strong viewpoint, rather than a losing weight or getting super lean/fit approach.
The layout of the program is a little unique but the basic idea is 8 week blocks, a 1 week deload after with guided stretching/yoga-ish type videos for recovery, before then starting a new 8 week block with some new exercises. The program is completely structured meaning they are to follow the workouts in a certain order. The exercise physiologist I worked with is the one who laid out the progressions of when/how much to make the various exercises more difficult (ie load increase/rep increase/band resistance increase, etc). It is a 2 year program, meaning there is a progressive process through which they do not repeat a single video until the end of the 2 years, after which time they can start the video workouts over from the beginning and use whatever their new/higher load or resistance they are capable of the 2nd time around.
One of the main differentiating features of my program is that I'm filming all the video workouts in beautiful nature spots - attached are a few examples. The music that goes with it will also be low key/acoustic, and just the whole experience is really meant to be more calm and slower paced, even though it's still lifting weights. There is a warmup and cool-down/stretching sequence at the start/end of each workout - these were designed by my mentoring PT to ensure that all the joints/movement of joints was appropriate for the designated workout to come etc.
Sorry for such a long job posting, but I wanted to make sure you got a feel for what this is as I'd like my new mentoring PT to really believe in this whole concept/style of approach to training - for this to fit with their worldview. Especially since in the strength training space, this does not seem to be a common approach. This will also give you a feel for the level of detail I typically communicate with by email etc when I seek to explain and vice versa to understand a concept.
Thank you for your time and hope to find the next right mentor!
