PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Special Education Resource Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in order to help them progress academically and socially and to develop the skills needed to become independent, responsible citizens
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Deliver Individualized Education: Assess students' skills, adapt general curriculum, and implement each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Responsibilities include setting learning goals, planning activities tailored to individual strengths and challenges, and monitoring progress
• Collaborate with Students & Families: Maintain regular communication with parents, teachers, counselors and administrators about students' progress and adjust instruction and support accordingly
• Support Inclusive Education: Work alongside general education teachers to adapt lessons so students with disabilities can participate in classroom activities
• Lead and Mentor Staff: Provide guidance to paraprofessionals and teacher assistants who support students with disabilities, ensuring they understand instructional plans, behavior strategies and safety protocols.
• Track and Document Progress: Maintain accurate student records, update IEPs as needed, and prepare reports that reflect student growth
• Ensure Student Safety: Supervise and ensure the well-being of students throughout the school day, including on field trips and during transitions, adhering to all district safety policies.
• Facilitate Transitions: Prepare students for progression from grade to grade and for life beyond school through direct instruction in academic, social and functional skills
• Professional Development: Stay current on special education laws and best practices, including assistive technology and culturally responsive strategies. Seek opportunities for continuous learning.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Valid State of Connecticut certification in Special Education (065, 165 or 265).
• Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field.
• Experience writing and implementing IEPs and using data to inform instruction.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bilingual
• Master's degree or advanced coursework in Special Education, behavior analysis, or related specialties.
• At least two years of successful classroom experience working with students who have diverse learning needs
• Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive instructional methods.
SALARY RANGE: Based on professional experience and NLEA contract
