Summary This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), Aviation Logistics Center (ALC), Industrial Operations Division (IOD), Industrial Production Branch, Elizabeth City, NC. Duties Help You will serve as a Sandblaster and be responsible for preparing various surfaces including aluminum, fiberglass, steel, composites, and other surfaces for painting by removing grease, paint, rust, slag, scale, carbon deposits, etc. to prescribed surface preparation standards. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: • Cleaning large structures and objects, or small and intricate items and preparing various airframes and components to be cleaned or blasted. • Determining proper masking material for cleaning method selected and surface to be cleaned. • Operating manually set and movement-controlled types of sandblasting equipment. • Transporting, storing, and using hazardous materials and hazardous wastes in the course of blasting operations. • Performing preventive maintenance on a variety of complex equipment. • Removing heavy soils, grease, protective coatings, and rubber sealants from various airframes and components, examining, preparing and performing surface treatment on various airframes and components prior to painting. At the WG-05 level, the same duties will be performed but the employee will receive tailored instruction, guidance, and training under closer supervision. Qualifications To qualify for the Sandblaster, WG-5423-05/07, applicants must meet the following screen-out job element to be considered for this position: • Ability To Do The Work Of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element). • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. • Operation of Sandblasting equipment. • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (other than blueprinting reading). • Use of Measuring Instruments. • Dexterity and Safety. Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. To meet the screen-out examples of the duties includes: ADD REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES "Skill in troubleshooting and repairing equipment, in marine (maritime), industrial, institutional, or commercial settings, providing the full range of electrical support in the areas of installation, diagnosis, repairing of electrical wiring, pulling of wires, and all other preventative maintenance. Have repaired/troubleshoot/diagnosis marine (maritime) generators(genset) and Transformers."
