We Breathe Program Intern (Remote – California-Based, Occasional Travel)

Position Summary: The California LGBTQ Health and Human Services Network (The Network), a program of Health Access Foundation, seeks a dedicated and enthusiastic candidate for the We Breathe Program Intern role to advance LGBTQ+ health equity across California. In addition to supporting the overall health equity goals of The Network, this position will specifically work on a project to reduce LGBTQ+ tobacco-related health disparities through education, outreach, media, and systems change. This includes conducting trainings, event planning, partner and relationship building, and support with communications work such as social media. The We Breathe Program Intern will have a strong interest in LGBTQ+ public health, policy and advocacy, and building relationships. Strong communication skills (both within our team and with partners), work ethic, and passion for LGBTQ health and equity is essential. Candidates must be able to work within a team, have room to demonstrate leadership ability and experience handling a great deal of responsibility. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative will be essential to success in this internship. Our team also values our interns’ wellness and working to prevent burn out The position is based in California. This is a remote position with occasional travel within California, primarily to Sacramento and Los Angeles County. Attendance at We Breathe’s Community Forum and I&E Day in Sacramento is required. The We Breathe Intern will be directly supervised by the We Breathe Program Coordinator with oversight from the CA LGBTQ HHS Manager of Programs. Specific Responsibilities Include: • In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, assist with the planning and coordination of program activities. • Help to maintain relationships with members of the California Tobacco Prevention Program (CTPP) funded-partners and Community Engagement Program (subcontractors) by helping plan, facilitate, and coordinate meetings with our partners. • Support in the development of online trainings, graphics, social media, resources, materials and tools that are utilized by We Breathe, partners, and subcontractors. • Assist in the drafting of research abstracts to statewide and national conferences on LGBTQ+ tobacco use. • Assist with developing materials for partners to utilize, including the We Breathe Policy Platform, and other educational materials such as op-eds, fliers, brochures etc. Assist in the planning of community events to promote tobacco-free LGBTQ+ communities in California. • Other duties as assigned Qualifications and Requirements: We encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply for this position. If selected for the role, applicant must provide a letter of acknowledgment from career counselor at the college, university or trade school. • Majors for applicants can include: Public Health, Public Administration and Policy, Communications, Political Science, Sociology, LGBTQ+/Gender/Ethnic Studies, and more (don’t let your major stop you from applying!). • Based in California for the duration of the internship. • Passion for and commitment to addressing the issues, needs and interests of LGBTQ people of color, youth, adults, families and community, including knowledge of the spectrum of gender identity and transgender issues. • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with marginalized communities, including an understanding of power, privilege, and oppression within LGBTQ+ communities. The team also prioritizes self care within this internship program. • Strong organizational skills, ability to stay focused with attention to detail while working on multiple projects. • An independent thinker and problem-solver, who is also self-motivated and a team player. • Ability to meet multiple, shifting deadlines and priorities with nimbleness and flexibility while maintaining a perspective on long-term goals. • Excellent speaking, writing, and analytical skills. • Commitment to inclusive, multi-cultural programming; prior experience working within coalitions with diverse communities and an understanding of intersectional oppressions is a plus but not required. • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with a wide range of personalities. • Ability to collaborate and participate in complex decision-making processes. • Effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations. • Write professional correspondence. • Strong computer skills (Google Suite and MS Office environment). • Reliable transportation for any occasional off-site work (travel costs are reimbursed for approved trips outside of a normal commute to the office). Outcomes: This internship will provide emerging public health leaders with an opportunity to gain valuable skills while supporting the work of The Network and its mission to advance LGBTQ+ health equity in California. This includes: • Real world professional experience working in a LGBTQ+ non-profit organization • Understanding of non-profit program management, public health, public policymaking process, and community organizing. • Development and improvement of various skills, including policy advocacy, outreach and engagement, public speaking, event planning, and research and data collection. • Opportunity to learn and practice LGBTQ+ health equity through an intersectional lens. • Learning about the issues and laws affecting the LGBTQ+ community. • Understanding the social drivers of health impacting LGBTQ+ communities. Compensation: Health Access Interns are paid $18.75 per hour. Disclaimers: • The Network Communications Internship is a temporary, part-time role requiring 15–20 hours per week. The position is scheduled to end on June 30, with the possibility of extension (up to 52 weeks from the start date) depending on funding. • Part-time hourly employees, including interns, accrue paid sick leave during pay periods, up to a maximum of 72 hours. • Part-time hourly employees do not accrue vacation or other PTO. • This position is not represented by the Health Access California recognized labor union. • Health Access observes federal holidays; the office is closed on those days, and part-time hourly employees are not scheduled or paid during those holidays. • Part-time hourly employees also observe an unpaid holiday break between Christmas and New Year’s. • Health Access reimburses travel-related costs for approved trips outside of the normal commute to the office. • We will acknowledge college credit arrangements however they must be arranged and approved by the course professor About the We Breathe Team: We Breathe serves as the CTPP-funded LGBTQ+ Coordinating Center for tobacco prevention in California. We work to guide and advise other organizations to ensure that their work is LGBTQ+ inclusive. We accomplish this by giving LGBTQ+ competency trainings, creating new educational materials, and advocating for necessary changes to policies, coalitions and more. Consisting of the Program Coordinator, Communications Specialist, and the Network Organizer, our team works to prioritize mental health and open communication, while also working to hold each other accountable for deadlines. Our small team hopes to work alongside an up and coming intern who will be able to help us make a change in LGBTQ+ health and advocacy!
