Job Summary
We are looking for a skilled and experienced Program Assistant to support medically fragile students as part of our Special Education program. This is a temporary, grant-funded position (October 13, 2023 - May 31, 2024) working 37.5 hours per week. As a Program Assistant, you will play a vital role in implementing specialized programs, providing health care support, and assisting licensed staff in meeting the needs of medically fragile students.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specific health care support to medically fragile students as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Health Care Plans, including gastrostomy feeding, surface suctioning, and Vagus Nerve Stimulation.
- Assist licensed staff in implementing classroom procedures, reinforcing positive behavior, and providing academic support to students.
- Assist students with medical and non-medical physical needs, personal care, and toileting needs as required.
- Develop basic knowledge of medical equipment used by students and assist with loading and unloading from buses.
- Implement students' health care and evacuation plans as necessary.
- Assist Education Association staff with organizing and supervising off-campus programs, performing clerical tasks, and previewing instructional materials.
- Compile data and document pertinent health information and services provided.
- Participate in professional development activities to enhance job performance.
- Cultivate inclusive and equitable working relationships with staff, students, and community members.
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you must:
- Have or obtain State and NCLB Approved Paraprofessional designation in accordance with Illinois State Board of Education requirements.
- Have physical ability to lift/move supplies, materials, and office equipment up to 50 lbs, as well as students needing assistance.
- Be proficient in the use of computers, office practices, procedures, and office equipment.
- Project a positive image of the district and exhibit a positive employee attitude.
- Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills and communicate clearly and respectfully with students, staff, parents, and the general public.
- Have awareness of a variety of student needs, including physical and social-emotional needs.
- Have previous experience working with youth and young adults.
- Complete district-approved Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training and training to support the needs of medically fragile students.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- Valid driver's license.
- Experience working with students with special needs.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and procedures used by students.
