Job Overview and Responsibilities

As a Senior Data Scientist - Statistics at blithequark, you will provide numerical modeling and analysis services to support critical financial, operational, and strategic planning decisions. You will participate in supporting project teams in value-added activities that generate practical solutions to complex business problems, explore new business opportunities, and drive improvement in business decisions. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing the strategy and methodologies to define and solve management problems through quantitative analysis and analytical models using statistics, machine learning, forecasting procedures, and structured programming languages.
  • Identifying, analyzing, or solving large complex problems using big data and statistics, forecasting, and machine learning principles.
  • Applying understanding of the business cycle to identify and implement statistical, forecasting, and machine learning solutions that will result in significant bottom-line contributions.
  • Building and developing statistical, forecasting, and machine learning model applications, and providing client support using operations research data.
  • Participating in model design, modeling, and model development for multiple initiatives that occur concurrently, and engaging with product delivery teams.
  • Raising concerns when the scope of analysis may not align with time available and selecting an appropriate scope of analysis to conduct, balancing return on investment to time available.
  • Designing scientific arrangement/developing hypotheses to test, understanding the limitations of analysis, and anticipating team questions to data and approach.
  • Identifying solution quality risks and on-time risks, and understanding the business value, process, and assumptions before focusing on the selection of a technical solution.
  • Grasping the intuition behind the numbers and providing ongoing analytical services to client organizations.
  • Communicating results to management and clients, contributing deck content, and building the story for the deck with guidance to summarize findings.
  • Creating and delivering presentations aligned with AI standards, and speaking in a manner appropriate for working groups and their level +1.
  • Staying informed about the latest scientific techniques and research in the statistics, forecasting, machine learning, and analysis fields.

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A postgraduate degree (PhD or ABD) in statistics or a related quantitative discipline, including quantitative analysis and application of advanced statistical methods.
  • Coursework or work experience with statistics or forecasting methods.
  • Coursework or work experience in model prototyping through the use of statistical package(s), including SAS or SPSS, Minitab, or BI tools.
  • Coursework or work experience with C, C++, Java, R, Python, or other structured programming languages.
  • Excellent business, technical, verbal/written communication, presentation, and sales skills, with flexibility to adapt to a changing business environment.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with clients.
  • Proficiency with MS Office.
  • Successful completion of an interview is expected to meet job qualifications.
  • Strong, reliable attendance is a fundamental requirement of the position.
  • You must be legally authorized to work in the US for any employer without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

While not essential, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • A minor in computer science or formal advanced computer science coursework.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in a scientific field.
  • 1+ year of airline industry experience.
  • 1+ year of experience planning and programming/coding data structures for large-scale computer models.
  • Experience with the Julia programming language.
  • Knowledge of blithequark/industry data sources.
  • Structured programming for large-scale computer models.
  • Demonstrated ability to create business value.
