Position Overview – Critical Environment Technician (Remote, Entry‑Level)

We are looking for motivated, hands‑on individuals to join the Cloud Tasks and Infrastructure (CO+I) team as Critical Environment Technicians (CET). In this remote, entry‑level role you will support the health, safety, and efficiency of Microsoft’s massive global data‑center ecosystem. You will work directly with experienced engineers, vendors, and cross‑functional partners to monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot the physical infrastructure that powers services such as Bing, Office 365, OneDrive, Xbox Live, and Azure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Monitoring & Inspection
    • Perform regular visual and instrumental inspections of HVAC, power, and mechanical systems across multiple data‑center sites.
    • Utilize telemetry, control panels, and CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) tools to detect anomalies, record trends, and raise alerts.
    • Document findings in detailed reports and recommend corrective actions.
  • Preventive & Reactive Maintenance
    • Execute scheduled preventive maintenance tasks (e.g., filter changes, belt tension checks, coolant level verification) following defined Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
    • Respond to incident tickets, troubleshoot equipment failures, and perform repairs on electrical, mechanical, and cooling systems under minimal supervision.
    • Collaborate with senior engineers to develop and refine Method of Procedure (MOP) documentation.
  • Safety & Compliance
    • Lead on‑site emergency response for fire, power loss, or environmental incidents, coordinating with security, facilities, and external vendors.
    • Ensure all work complies with local regulations, building codes, and Microsoft’s internal safety standards (EOPs – Emergency Operating Procedures).
    • Maintain accurate safety logs and conduct post‑incident root‑cause analyses.
  • Vendor & Contractor Management
    • Supervise third‑party technicians and contractors during service windows, confirming proper lock‑out/tag‑out procedures and quality of work.
    • Verify that all external work aligns with defined scope, safety protocols, and timeline commitments.
    • Provide clear hand‑over documentation for follow‑up activities.
  • Data‑Center Documentation & Reporting
    • Maintain up‑to‑date configuration records, equipment inventories, and maintenance histories within the CMMS.
    • Generate weekly and monthly performance metrics, highlighting trends in equipment health, uptime, and energy efficiency.
    • Contribute to continuous‑improvement initiatives by proposing enhancements to SOPs, MOPs, and monitoring strategies.

Essential Qualifications (Required)

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; additional technical certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, HVAC/R, Electrical) are a plus.
  • Minimum 4 years of hands‑on experience in a technical or operational role involving high‑availability environments (e.g., server farms, manufacturing plants, oil & gas facilities, hospitals).
  • Demonstrated ability to work 12‑hour rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems, with a willingness to deepen expertise through on‑the‑job training.
  • Proven record of adhering to safety protocols and completing accurate documentation.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a remote setting.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice‑to‑Have)

  • Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with CMMS platforms (e.g., ServiceNow, Maximo) and data‑center monitoring tools (e.g., DCIM, SCADA).
  • Basic scripting or automation knowledge (PowerShell, Python) to streamline routine tasks.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure infrastructure concepts and cloud‑service reliability standards.
  • Certification in OSHA 10/30, NFPA, or similar safety standards.

  • Communication: Clear written and verbal communication for incident reporting, vendor coordination, and cross‑team collaboration.
  • Time Management: Efficiently prioritize tasks during high‑pressure incidents and balance scheduled maintenance windows.
  • Teamwork: Work cohesively with engineers, security personnel, and remote support teams while maintaining autonomy.
  • Adaptability: Thrive in a fast‑changing environment where new technologies and processes are continuously introduced.

  • Clear career pathways leading to roles such as Data‑Center Operations Engineer, Facilities Reliability Engineer, or Cloud Infrastructure Project Manager.
  • Opportunities to participate in cross‑functional “Career Pivot” projects that broaden experience beyond the data‑center environment.
