Position Summary and Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a rigorous research program in water resources and spatial analyses, with a strong emphasis on GIS and/or remote sensing. The ideal applicant will have a deep understanding of a wide range of topics in water resources and GIS, ensuring that they can impart core water-resource and GIS concepts to their students. The key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in water resources, GIS, and related fields, with a focus on spatial analysis, hydrology, and environmental sustainability
  • Establishing a nationally or internationally recognized research program in water resources and spatial analyses, with a strong emphasis on GIS and/or remote sensing
  • Mentoring and advising students, including graduate students, in research and academic pursuits
  • Contributing to the development of a new Master's degree in GIS and Remote Sensing
  • Participating in departmental, college, and university service, including committee work and community engagement
  • Collaborating with colleagues from other departments and units, including the Departments of Biology, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and Chemistry, as well as the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the IU Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering

Essential and Preferred Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must have:

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, including geography, hydrology, or closely related earth/environmental sciences, with a strong background in GIS and/or remote sensing
  • A strong potential for establishing a rigorous research program in water resources and spatial analyses
  • Excellent teaching and communication skills, with the ability to impart complex concepts to students from diverse backgrounds
  • A commitment to mentoring, teaching, or outreach to people from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation college students, low-income students, racial and ethnic minorities, women, LGBTQ+, and other underrepresented groups

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience in developing and teaching courses in water resources, GIS, and related fields
  • A strong record of research productivity, including peer-reviewed publications and presentations
  • Experience in collaborating with colleagues from other departments and units
  • A commitment to contributing to the Department of Geography's curricular offerings and research portfolio in ways that enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion
