Role Overview
The Online Crisis Counselor will play a vital role in our crisis chat and text services, providing immediate support and intervention to individuals in emotional distress. This position requires a unique blend of emotional intelligence, crisis management skills, and technical proficiency. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for assessing the needs of each chat or text visitor, providing crisis intervention counseling, and connecting individuals with essential resources and services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide crisis intervention and emotional support to individuals in distress through our Crisis Chat and Text services
- Conduct thorough assessments to determine the appropriate means of intervention and support
- Complete risk assessments, safety planning, de-escalation, and follow-up with chat visitors as needed
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with a diverse range of chat and text visitors
- Provide crisis intervention counseling and support to individuals in crisis, including those who are suicidal or experiencing mental health emergencies
- Collaborate with emergency responders and other services as needed to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals in crisis
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all crisis chats and texts, including risk assessments, safety plans, and follow-up actions
- Meet productivity standards, including completing a minimum of 1.5 chats or texts per hour
- Participate in ongoing quality evaluation and improvement processes to ensure the highest standards of care and support
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as counseling, social work, or mental health
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in mental health services, preferably in crisis intervention or suicide prevention
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals in crisis
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and make sound decisions in high-pressure situations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other software applications, with the ability to learn new systems and technologies quickly
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to collaboration and teamwork
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related field, such as counseling, social work, or mental health
- Experience working in a crisis chat or text service, or other related field
- Certification in crisis intervention or suicide prevention, such as Crisis Worker Certification
- Knowledge of local and statewide community resources, with the ability to connect individuals with essential services and support
