Job Overview

We are seeking a seasoned and visionary Managing Editor to spearhead the content strategy for our urban planning platform and online educational resource. This role requires a strong and diverse skillset in relevant areas to drive success. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for overseeing content production, ensuring high-quality and relevant materials, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to synchronize editorial goals with broader organizational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate and implement a comprehensive editorial strategy for the website, educational products, and publications, leveraging data-driven insights to guide content decisions.
  • Establish editorial objectives and set the overarching direction for content creation across various platforms.
  • Organize editorial activities, manage the content calendar, and ensure timely completion of all projects.
  • Oversee the content budget, aligning financial resources with editorial goals.
  • Act as a representative of the content team in leadership discussions, providing updates on significant projects and metrics.
  • Collaborate with marketing, sales, and product teams to synchronize editorial goals with broader organizational objectives.
  • Manage editorial calendars, adapting them to accommodate the needs of different teams and timelines.
  • Create, write, and edit high-quality news articles, feature stories, blogs, and additional content pertaining to urban planning and design.
  • Maintain content relevance and accuracy, ensuring engagement with the target audience of urban planners and designers.
  • Lead and mentor the editorial team, including an editor and video producer/editor, ensuring alignment with departmental goals and objectives.
  • Conduct weekly one-on-one meetings to provide guidance, address challenges, and clarify priorities and deadlines for the team.

Required Skills

To succeed in this role, you will need to possess a unique blend of skills, experience, and passion. We are looking for a candidate with:

  • 5+ years of relevant editorial experience, ideally in urban planning, journalism, or digital media.
  • Deep-rooted passion for urban planning and a solid understanding of the planning media landscape.
  • Exceptional editing and writing capabilities, with experience in online journalism or communications.
  • Proven track record in growing and managing a media platform effectively.
  • Proficiency with content management systems, SEO practices, and analytics tools.
  • Strong organizational abilities with a knack for managing multiple projects and prioritizing tasks efficiently.
  • Experience in leading cross-functional teams and collaborating across departments.
  • Familiarity with digital tools such as Google Suite, Slack, Zoom, Jira, Notion, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • A growth-oriented mindset, coupled with a genuine enthusiasm for learning and evolving the business.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Urban Planning, or a related field. However, we also welcome applications from candidates with equivalent experience and a strong passion for urban planning and education.

Compensation and Benefits

We offer a competitive total rewards package, including:

  • Base Salary: $70,000 - $115,000 per year.
  • Paid Time Off: 15 days, increasing to 20 days after four years.
  • Holiday Time Off: Approximately 10 days per year.
  • Health Benefits: Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance (Employer-selected plan, covered at 95%).
  • 401(k): Company-sponsored plan with employer match after 60 days.
