As a Coding Education Instructor, you will develop and deliver comprehensive clinical coding training for hospital inpatient and outpatient services. Training topics include disease and trauma pathophysiology, surgical and operative procedures, ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT/HCPCS coding conventions and guidelines, modifiers and Medicare prospective payment system updates. This role provides support to coding caregivers and gives them the opportunity to learn and grow in their position.
A caregiver in this role works remotely from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with a flexible start time between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. based on departmental needs, education requests, etc.
Occasionally, caregivers may be required to provide on-site education for groups or individual providers.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Research, develop and deliver hospital inpatient or hospital outpatient clinical coding training.
Assess the educational needs of coding staff, management and physicians and develop presentations and educational resources to address those needs.
Assist with the certification program for coding staff and make recommendations for credentialing and certification.
Communicate coding changes to coding staff and conduct coding reviews and training programs to ensure coding quality.
Develop all training materials and coding aids for both formal training and use by coders in daily work.
Develop coding curriculum and corresponding training Course manual.
Ensure billed service is accurately coded.
Hold regular meetings to communicate new coding-related findings.
Identify elements of a medical record's structure and content and code abstracting.
Lead training sessions on current coding information in the medical field.
Maintain knowledge of ICD10 and CPT classifications and coding of diagnoses and procedures.
Organize and participate in coding and reimbursement meetings.
Participate in the hiring process and educational planning for coding staff.
Perform analysis of benchmarking profiles.
Perform quality assurance reviews to assess comprehension of training efforts.
Provide continual coding and payer updates.
Provide consultation, leadership and expertise to internal management in the planning, implementation and delivery of coding education
Research updated coding information, research coding issues that arise and review and respond to coding questions.
Serve as a technical resource for all personnel involved and ensure that information is accurate and current.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Associate’s Degree in Health Information Technology or Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management
10 years of hospital inpatient or hospital outpatient coding experience
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
OR Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
Advanced level ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT coding training
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
10 years of professional coding experience
Outpatient technical coding experience/background
Strong surgical knowledge/experience
Experience with presenting and educating on coding topics
CPC (AAPC – American Academy of Professional Coders) certification
Knowledge of adult learning methodologies
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.
Ability to travel throughout the hospital system.
Ability to work with physical records, such as retrieving and filing them.
Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment.
Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
In some locations, ability to move up to 25 lbs.

Pay Range
Minimum Annual Salary: $69,600.00
Maximum Annual Salary: $106,132.50
The pay range displayed on this job posting reflects the anticipated range for new hires. A successful candidate’s actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate’s work history, experience, skill set and education. The pay range displayed does not include any applicable pay practices (e.g., shift differentials, overtime, etc.).
