About Software Engineer I position:

As a Software Engineer I at Avalon, you’ll be part of a collaborative and innovative environment where you’ll help build and support applications that drive our business forward. This is a great opportunity to grow your skills, contribute to impactful projects, and learn from experienced engineers.

You’ll work closely with peers, stakeholders, and leadership, communicating effectively and contributing to agile teams. Software Engineer I’s participate in code reviews, share ideas, and help foster a culture of continuous improvement and respectful feedback. You’ll be supported through mentorship, peer collaboration, and hands-on experience, with access to learning resources and opportunities to build a strong foundation in software engineering.

This position is eligible for remote work, but regular business travel will be required, including Avalon's corporate office located in Tampa, Florida.  

Software Engineer I – Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with team members to assess business requirements and assist in creating detailed design documentation.
  • Learn to read, interpret, and maintain technical diagrams and documentation, including context diagrams, data flow diagrams, and process flows, with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Assist in developing unit and regression test plans to ensure high-quality software delivery.
  • Support application administration and help triage and resolve integration issues. Document and track defects, and contribute to identifying and implementing solutions.
  • Contribute to the development of modular, maintainable, and reusable application code under the mentorship of senior developers.
  • Follow Avalon’s Agile Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Change Management processes for coding, testing, and deployment.
  • Participate in code reviews, both giving and receiving feedback, to improve code quality and learn best practices.
  • Develop an understanding of how IT solutions align with business goals and contribute to operational success.
  • Build knowledge of health plan operations and related technical systems through hands-on experience and team collaboration.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation to support software systems that operate 24x7x365, with appropriate guidance and support.

Software Engineer I – Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or related discipline; or the equivalent years of relevant business and technical experience.
  • Familiarity with one or more programming languages such as Java, Go, or TypeScript.
  • Basic understanding of relational databases and experience working with SQL (e.g., MSSQL).
  • Experience using source control tools like Git.
  • Exposure to development environments such as IntelliJ, VSCode, or Eclipse.
  • Understanding of web services and integration techniques (e.g., REST, SOAP, APIs, Microservices).
  • Ability to navigate and perform basic tasks in a Linux environment.
  • Foundational knowledge of Agile methodologies and the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to learn, take feedback, and grow professionally.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to troubleshoot basic technical issues.

Software Engineer I – Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Hands-on experience or familiarity with RESTful services and API development.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS or similar environments.
  • Experience or coursework involving front-end technologies like React, NextJS, CSS/SASS, MaterialUI, and/or Bootstrap.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in one or more programming languages: Java, Go, or TypeScript.
  • Experience with or understanding of unit testing practices and tools.
  • Exposure to containerization tools like Docker.
  • Familiarity with event streaming platforms such as Kafka.
  • Interest or experience in healthcare technology or systems.
  • Awareness of HIPAA regulations and standards related to data privacy and security (e.g., PHI, IIHI).
