Cybersecurity SME (Solution Development) – Part-Time, Remote
Apavo is a small, fast-growing cybersecurity services company supporting federal agencies across DoD and the Intelligence Community. We’re looking for part-time cybersecurity subject matter experts who can support us by drafting technical solution content for RFIs, RFPs, and partner submissions.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- You'll help us develop technical content by:
- Writing technical approaches and methodologies for federal cybersecurity work.
- Providing clear explanations of how you would execute tasks in your domain.
- Drafting technical responses to RFIs/RFPs.
- Helping us create reusable content on cybersecurity processes, tools, and best practices.
- Offering guidance on realistic staffing, workflows, and solutioning assumptions.
- Answering ad-hoc technical questions during proposal development.
This role is not a proposal writer position. We don’t need formatted volumes or polished proposal language. We need subject-matter expertise and clear technical explanations — and we’ll handle the proposal formatting.
Who We’re Looking For:
We’re open to multiple SME specialties. Strong candidates will have DOD and/or IC expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- RMF / A&A / Compliance
- Incident Handling and Response
- SOC Implementation / Operations
- Threat Hunting / Threat Intelligence
- Vulnerability Management
- Cybersecurity Program/Project Management
- Cloud Security / Zero Trust / Security Engineering
You do NOT need to be a proposal writer. You just need to write clearly and explain technical concepts in writing in a way that’s easy to understand.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in your cybersecurity specialty.
- Experience supporting DoD, IC, or federal environments (preferred).
- Ability to write clear technical explanations and methodologies.
- Understanding of typical federal cybersecurity expectations (NIST, JSIG, RMF, etc.).
- Reliability, professionalism, and strong communication skills.
Estimated Workload:
- Part-time, as-needed (typically 2–6 hours per solution or task).
- Flexible hours.
- Occasional scheduled discussions with our team (sometimes evenings — scheduled in advance).
Writing Sample Required:
Please submit one original writing sample (500-1000) words that demonstrates your ability to explain a technical approach within your cybersecurity domain of expertise.
Your response should describe:
How you would approach implementing, improving, or delivering a cybersecurity capability or function in your area of specialization within a DOD, IC or federal environment.
To support your explanation, you may create your own scenario and assumptions – for example:
- Which federal agency
- Size or complexity of environment
- Number and type of systems (classified, unclassified, cloud, hybrid, etc.)
- Maturity level of current tools or processes
- Any constraints or operational context
Your assumptions can be brief – a few bullet points or a short introduction is fine.
We are evaluating:
- Clarity of thought
- Depth and credibility of your technical approach
- Ability to communicate complex ideas clearly
- Realistic understanding of how cybersecurity capabilities are delivered in a DOD, IC or federal environment
We are NOT evaluating proposal formatting or polished proposal language.
Applications without a writing sample will not be considered and rate negotiation will be dependent on an evaluation of the writing sample submitted.
