Description The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 11 is seeking to hire a student assistant, in a learning capacity, under close supervision of the Field Surveys Manager, the Right of Way Engineering Office Manager and the Survey Office Manager, in a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in a wide range of services relating to Land Surveys Field Unit, Right of Way Engineering and Survey Office, meeting the expectations of conducting field surveying activities and learning engineering/drafting software. Field and office experience will be allocated based on unit workload and learning objectives. Requirements Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting. Majors/Fields of Study Civil Engineering, Geomatics Engineering / Surveying Engineering / Land Surveying, Environmental Engineering, General Engineering, Geology, Engineering Technology (civil or survey-focused) ,Construction Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. Work Schedule Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. Additional Work Schedule Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer). Compensation $18.28 - $28.16 per hour. Minimum Qualifications • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. • Excellent analytical skills. • Excellent communication skills. • Strong knowledge of spreadsheet applications. • Must possess the ability to: • Apply engineering and design classroom instructions to work situations. • Learn procedures and methods. • Work well with others in a team environment. • Working knowledge of algebra and trigonometry. • Ability to perform detailed engineering calculations. • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications, algebra and trigonometry. • Ability to perform the less complex field and office work. • Ability to make precise surveying measurements, and interpret less difficult surveying computations. • Must have a valid driver's license. Preferred Qualifications • Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking. Duties and Responsibilities • In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist in the Party Chief in various field surveying tasks such as horizontal/vertical control surveys and design data surveys, photogrammetric mapping, monumentation, and construction surveys. • In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist the Right of Way Engineering Office Manager and/or Survey Office Manager in various office surveying tasks such as Civil 3D project creation, engineering drafting and right of way mapping, interaction with Geographic Information System data, reviewing project plans/notes, and attending project meetings. • In a learning capacity, assist in making surveying computations using electronic calculators and computer systems. • In a learning capacity, assist with adjustment and calibration of precise surveying instruments, and various technical field tasks. Physical Requirements Work is usually accomplished out-of-doors in remote areas, along the travel way of highways, wetlands, in heavy construction zones, on bridge caps and piles, mountain tops and on the property of private citizens. Incumbent will be subject to adverse weather conditions including high heat and freezing cold. Manual labor may be intense. This position requires using cutting tools to clear brush which can be dense and could include working near poison oak, insects and other wildlife. Incumbent can expect to drive survey stakes and markers with sledgehammers. Extensive walking, often over steep and uneven terrain, while transporting stakes, supplies, and equipment is necessary. The incumbent can expect to work under very noisy conditions and is required to be tolerant of working within close range of high-speed traffic and heavy equipment. Possession of a valid driver's license is required to operate a State-owned or leased vehicle. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office or in a field environment (90% Field Work). Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
