Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a Senior Counsel, Privacy & Digital to provide strategic legal guidance on complex legal issues related to data privacy, cybersecurity and data governance across the enterprise. This role will advise business leaders and internal stakeholders on legal matters involving data privacy, cybersecurity, digital platforms, emerging technologies, and the responsible use of personal information to support the company’s operations and strategic objectives. The Senior Counsel will report directly to the Assistant General Counsel & Chief Privacy Officer. The position is primarily responsible for counseling on privacy‑by‑design, data governance, and compliance with global privacy laws; assessing legal and regulatory risks associated with digital initiatives; and developing practical guidance, policies, and contractual protections related to data use, information sharing, and technology enablement. The Senior Counsel will also support incident response efforts, review and advise on vendor and technology agreements with digital and data implications, and help ensure compliance throughout the lifecycle of digital products and services. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:   Performs research and provides professional legal counseling on data privacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and technology‑related matters to ensure the Company, its data, systems, and digital initiatives are legally protected and structured to mitigate regulatory and operational risk. Independently performs complex and high‑impact legal assignments within the Law organization and across the enterprise on data protection, information governance, and technology risk. Advises management on legal considerations related to data strategy, digital initiatives, technology enablement, privacy‑by‑design, cybersecurity risk, third‑party data sharing, artificial intelligence use, and regulatory compliance obligations. Conducts due diligence efforts related to data privacy impact assessments and similarly required workflows. Proactively develops and delivers guidance, training, and presentations to business leaders and cross‑functional teams on governance, risk management, and best practices. Independently and directly counsels clients, including senior and executive management, on privacy matters of material significance to the Company. Maintains proactive communication with Law leadership on emerging risks, incidents, and key developments to support a “no surprises” environment. Effectively identifies, assesses, and manages legal risk across assigned areas of responsibility. Ensures continuing legal education and professional development requirements are met and remains current on developments in evolving regulatory landscape impacting digital business operations. Performs other duties, as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:   Juris Doctorate degree required Current license to practice law in a U.S. state, member in good standing. Continued employment will be conditioned upon obtaining and maintaining membership in Ohio or other State Bar Minimum of ten years of licensed legal experience Minimum of five years of experience practicing data privacy law, with a focus on GDPR and CCPA compliance SKILLS:  Strong critical thinking skills and proven ability to make sound, timely decisions  Exceptional collaboration skills with the ability to build strong relationships and serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders Exceptional communication skills with authenticity and clarity Deep business acumen and ability to align legal strategy with organizational goals Expert conflict resolution and negotiation capabilities Commitment to high work standards and ethical practices Ability to manage complex workloads and prioritize effectively Service-oriented approach with a focus on client and stakeholder needs Accountability for outcomes and fostering a culture of responsibility Demonstrated experience identifying and resolving legal issues quickly and effectively As an energy industry leader, our career opportunities fuel personal and professional growth.
