English Tutor for 6th Grade Student (Reading & Writing) - Contract to Hire

We are seeking a dedicated and creative English tutor for a long-term position working with a 6th-grade ESL student who speaks English fluently but needs focused help with reading comprehension and writing skills. The ideal tutor will provide 1 live video sessions per week and assign daily practice tasks for the days in between — ideally using free, engaging resources (like Khan Academy, ReadTheory, etc.) and gamifying the learning experience to keep it fun and motivating. This is a long-term opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping students grow and can create a customized and interactive learning path. Responsibilities: Conduct 1 60 minute tutoring sessions per week Start with a simple assessment or placement test to determine the student’s current reading/writing level Focus sessions on improving reading comprehension, sentence construction, vocabulary, and basic writing skills Assign daily or weekly practice tasks, using free online tools and printable resources Gamify assignments when possible (using points, challenges, badges, etc.) to boost motivation Track progress and adjust learning plans as needed Communicate regularly with parent/guardian on progress and next steps Requirements: Experience teaching English (reading & writing) to ESL or elementary/middle school students Creative approach to learning — especially making reading and writing more enjoyable Fluent in English (native or near-native level) Familiarity with free online tools like Khan Academy, CommonLit, ReadTheory, Newsela, or your own trusted resources Patient, encouraging, and organized Bonus (Not Required): Familiarity with U.S. middle school English standards Position Details: 1 session/week via Zoom (or preferred platform) Ongoing role — 3–6 months minimum, with potential for much longer To Apply: Please share: A short summary of your experience teaching English (especially reading/writing) An example of how you might gamify a reading or writing task Your hourly rate and availability Apply tot his job Apply To this Job
