The Role: Senior Principal Network Engineer
As a Senior Principal Network Engineer on our Networking and Data Center Operations team, you will be a technical leader responsible for the planning, design, implementation, and maintenance of our network architectures. This is a critical role that requires not only deep technical expertise but also the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage large-scale project activities, translating business requirements into actionable plans and driving successful outcomes across departments.
- Apply technical expertise and interpersonal influence to negotiate architecture design and product decisions that align with high-level business goals.
- Design, specify, release, and support key infrastructure changes, ensuring seamless integration and minimal disruption to our operations.
- Direct, support, and execute the implementation of complex network changes, assessing project risks and identifying feasible solutions.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, improving protocols and procedures and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with IT technical staff and leadership to influence IT policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and business needs.
- Engage directly with the end-user community, providing high-level technical support and escalating complex issues.
- Develop detailed technical documentation for both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clarity and accessibility.
- Participate in on-call support rotations, demonstrating the ability to work independently during off-hours.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 12+ years of experience in designing and operating complex IT network systems in production environments, including both on-premises and public cloud-based infrastructures.
- Mastery of IT networking core concepts, with knowledge equivalent to CCNP or greater.
- Extensive experience with multiple network vendors, including Cisco, Juniper, Arista, Palo Alto, and Brocade/Extreme.
- Deep understanding of network operating systems and protocols, as well as information security principles and their practical application.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with cross-functional teams and garner support from stakeholders.
- Expertise in scripting and programming to automate IT networking configuration.
- Comprehensive and accurate documentation practices.
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Networking or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Prior experience working in an Agile environment.
- Alignment with BITS values, including being mission-driven, fostering trust, inclusion, teamwork, continuous improvement, and having fun.
Preferred Skills and Experiences:
- Certifications or proven knowledge of ITIL, Agile (Scrum), and/or Project Management.
- Extensive experience with Ansible and Terraform.
- Total comfort working with version control systems, specifically Git/GitHub.
- Demonstrated record of success in technical leadership of similar organizations.
- Prior on-call support experience and ability to work independently during off-hours.
