Industrial Designer Needed: Premium Clamshell Case Product – CAD + DFM + Prototyping
I’m hiring an experienced industrial designer / mechanical product designer to take a set of concept visuals and develop a production-ready design suitable for injection moulding.
This is a premium compact organiser in a clamshell hard-case form factor.
You should be able to collaborate with me to refine the concept and ensure that the final designs meet functional and aesthetic requirements. If you have a portfolio showcasing your previous product designs, I would love to see it!
What I need (scope):
Convert concept into a manufacturable design (injection moulded plastic, multi-part assembly)
Full 3D CAD for all components + assembly approach
DFM work: draft angles, wall thickness, tolerances, parting lines, snaps/hinges/closures, assembly strategy, avoidance of rattles/weak points
Deliverables: STEP/IGES + 2D drawings with key dimensions/tolerances + exploded view/assembly drawing
Support through early prototypes: iterate CAD based on prototype/toolmaker feedback
(Optional) Help prepare a short RFQ pack and/or review manufacturer feedback
Mechanisms / design challenges (high level):
A clamshell case closure (snap or magnetic-style feel)
Multiple internal moving parts (e.g., lids/covers/compartments) requiring reliable, repeatable action
Premium tactile experience (smooth, quiet, precise closure; no flexy/cheap feel)
Surface finish and decoration considerations (pattern/colour application) while keeping manufacturing practical
Ideal experience:
Designed injection-moulded consumer products that went to production
Strong with closures/hinges/snaps/magnets and tolerance stack-up
Comfortable working directly with factories/toolmakers and iterating fast
CAD tools: SolidWorks preferred (Fusion 360 also fine)
How to apply (please include):
2–3 relevant portfolio examples (small plastic products, cases, organisers, closures)
Your CAD toolset + file formats you can deliver
Suggested milestone plan + estimated timeline
Any early assumptions/risks you’d flag on projects like this
