Eye Care Case Specialist - Full Time Position

Sight Savers America is an Alabama-based 501(c) (3) nonprofit that was founded in 1997. Our mission is to identify and secure treatment for unmet vision needs that impede a child’s ability to reach their full potential in school and in life.
Over the last 27 years, the Sight Savers America (SSA) Eye Care Program has provided individual case managed follow-up eye care services to more than 600,000 children who failed vision screenings or were otherwise referred to SSA. Due to our innovation and track record of success, SSA has received many awards, such as the 2012 American Optometric Association’s “Distinguished Service Award.” SSA is national model for children’s case managed follow-up eye care and has made numerous national presentations detailing our successful case management process.
Although SSA has traditionally operated with staff working from our Pelham office (unless in the field for work), we have been utilizing a hybrid model since July 2022. This will require you are in the office 2-3 days per week. These set days are the same for the entire staff. The other 2-3 days a week you may work remotely from home or from the office if so desired. Please note, Executive Leadership and your direct supervisor retain the right to call employees back to the office if the need arises.

Summary of Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Associate Director of the Eye Care Program, the Case Specialist is responsible for the coordination of follow up eye care services for children referred to SSA. Case Specialists will case manage children’s eye care needs, from the initial exam through final treatment. Each employee serving in the program will have the opportunity to help improve the eyesight and overall quality of life for thousands of children each year.
Ideal candidates will have a bachelor’s degree, work well in a team environment, be dependable, self-motivated, detail oriented, and have a passion for serving children.
Key Responsibilities:
Contact parents/guardians whose children have been referred to SSA for eye care follow-up from various referral sources
Educate parents about their child’s failed vision screening and the importance of recurrent eye care
Assist parents/guardians throughout the process of obtaining eye care for their children
Coordinate eye care for qualifying children
Arrange transportation to eye care services, when necessary
Maintain strict confidentiality of all internal patient information
Maintain professional appearance and conduct at all times
Adhere to SSA procedures as provided and periodically updated
Adhere to SSA procedures for documentation of patient information as directed
Answer telephone appropriately during working hours
Adhere to policies for contact with doctors, medical service providers and other professionals associated with The SSA Eye Care Program
Help coordinate and attend rural eye clinics in areas of AL without an eye care professional
Minimum Qualifications and Required Skills:
Strong commitment to community service with a desire to make a difference in the lives of children
BA or BS strongly preferred
Minimum two years work experience
Ability to understand and maintain complete confidentiality
Experience with and knowledge of computer operation; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and database applications
Database experienced preferred
Demonstrated desire and ability to work in the manner trained, within established protocol and with limited supervision
Extreme attention to detail
Excellent time management and organizational skills
Professional telephone etiquette and customer service skills
Communicate in a positive manner and with respect for other
Ability to respond quickly and accurately to management requests
Typing with productive speed
Ability to be a team player who works well with others
Ability to interact and relate to a diverse population of parents/guardians, school professionals, medical professionals, etc
Communicate in a positive manner and with respect for others
Demonstrate a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and respect for others
Ability to be able to organize materials (such as laptop and files) in order to have all necessary materials wherever you are working from. Bilingual in both written and spoken English and Spanish not required, but additionally compensated
