Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer – Mission Planning Systems
Overview
We are seeking a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to design, deploy, and sustain scalable, secure cloud and hybrid infrastructure supporting mission-critical DoD software systems. In this role you will serve as a technical lead for infrastructure across development, integration, and production-like environments, working closely with software engineers, DevSecOps practitioners, and government customers in an Agile environment embedded alongside a major defense prime. This position requires hands-on cloud expertise combined with a strong understanding of DoD security and compliance requirements.
Responsibilities
• Design, deploy, and manage cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments supporting mission planning software development, integration, test, and operations.
• Architect and implement infrastructure-as-code (IaC) solutions using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent to enable repeatable, auditable environment provisioning.
• Build and maintain container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes, OpenShift, or equivalent) for microservice-based application deployments.
• Design and operate CI/CD pipeline infrastructure, including build agents, artifact repositories, and deployment automation.
• Implement and enforce cloud security controls, network segmentation, identity and access management (IAM), and compliance guardrails consistent with DoD RMF and NIST standards.
• Monitor infrastructure health, performance, and availability; respond to and remediate incidents across cloud and on-premises environments.
• Collaborate with software engineers to optimize application deployment architectures and infrastructure resource utilization.
• Evaluate and introduce new cloud services, tools, and patterns to improve reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
• Produce and maintain infrastructure documentation including architecture diagrams, runbooks, and configuration baselines.
• Mentor junior infrastructure and DevSecOps engineers on cloud best practices and tooling.
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or related field; or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of hands-on cloud infrastructure engineering experience across one or more major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) or equivalent government/hybrid cloud environments.
• Demonstrated experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, or equivalent).
• Proficiency with container technologies (Docker, Podman) and orchestration platforms (Kubernetes, OpenShift).
• Experience designing and operating CI/CD pipeline infrastructure (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Bamboo, or equivalent).
• Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (VPCs, subnets, load balancing, DNS, firewalls) in cloud environments.
• Familiarity with DoD security frameworks including Risk Management Framework (RMF) and NIST 800-53.
• U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance (active clearance strongly preferred).
Highly Regarded
• Experience operating in classified or air-gapped cloud environments (e.g., AWS GovCloud, Azure Government, or on-premises DoD cloud stacks).
• Direct experience supporting Mission Planning Systems (MPS) programs such as JMPS, JOMS, or NOMS.
• Experience with service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd) and zero-trust network architectures.
• Familiarity with DoD DevSecOps reference architectures and Platform One / Iron Bank hardened container pipelines.
• Experience with observability and monitoring stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/OpenSearch, or equivalent).
• Relevant cloud certifications (AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator, GCP Professional Cloud Architect, or equivalent).
• Prior experience working on DoD or aerospace/defense programs, particularly with large prime contractors.
