Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Lead Software Engineer to drive our media experience layer initiative. In this role, you will be responsible for planning and developing a layered architecture for media playback that will span across all of arenaflex's direct-to-consumer brands and streaming platforms. Your primary focus will be collaborating with media playback teams across various platforms to ensure a consistent programming framework that delivers a top-tier streaming experience for our viewers while providing a foundation for future media playback innovation.

This is a full-time, remote position that offers the flexibility to work from anywhere while remaining deeply integrated with our engineering teams. You will play a critical role in architecting solutions that power seamless video playback across multiple devices and platforms, ensuring that our subscribers enjoy the best possible viewing experience.

Key Responsibilities

As a Lead Software Engineer at arenaflex, you will be entrusted with a variety of strategic and technical responsibilities that are essential to the success of our media experience layer. Your duties will include:

  • Architectural Design and Planning: Develop and implement a layered design architecture for media playback that can be integrated across all of arenaflex's streaming platforms and direct-to-consumer products. Ensure scalability, performance, and maintainability of the codebase.
  • Cross-Platform Collaboration: Work closely with media playback teams on different platforms to guarantee a consistent programming framework. Coordinate with peer services and front-end teams to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance.
  • Client Module Development: Write high-quality client modules using coding best practices tailored to each target platform. Ensure code quality, documentation, and adherence to industry standards.
  • Innovation and Research: Drive innovative development for media playback experiences, exploring new technologies and approaches that enhance viewer engagement and satisfaction.
  • Project Planning and Team Engagement: Participate actively in project planning, sprint planning, and team activities. Contribute to roadmapping efforts and provide technical guidance to cross-functional teams.
  • Technical Leadership: Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and establish best practices for the team. Ensure alignment with arenaflex's technical standards and vision.
  • Performance Optimization: Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in media playback pipelines. Optimize streaming protocols and delivery mechanisms for minimal latency and maximum quality.
  • Quality Assurance: Collaborate with QA teams to develop comprehensive testing strategies. Ensure robust error handling and graceful degradation across various network conditions and device capabilities.

Essential Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates must possess the following qualifications and skills:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
  • Platform Expertise: Minimum of 3 years of experience in Roku SceneGraph and BrightScript development. Strong understanding of the Roku ecosystem and its development lifecycle.
  • Streaming Technologies: At least 3 years of experience working with HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) or MPEG-DASH adaptive streaming solutions. Deep knowledge of adaptive bitrate streaming protocols.
  • Media Formats: Extensive experience and expertise working with HLS, Transport Stream (MPEG-TS), and CMAF (Common Media Application Format) media formats. Understanding of container formats and codec implementations.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present technical information clearly to diverse audiences, including non-technical stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing technical challenges.
  • Team Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and collaborate with multiple stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

While the following qualifications are not mandatory, they would be highly valued in candidates:

  • Experience with additional streaming platforms such as Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, or smart TV platforms.
  • Knowledge of other programming languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Kotlin, or Swift.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and services (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • Understanding of content delivery networks (CDNs) and edge computing.
  • Background in multimedia frameworks and player development.
  • Experience with agile methodologies and modern software development practices.
