Junior Biologist/ Lead Technician
Roe Environmental is an environmental consulting firm specializing in construction mitigation planning, fish and wildlife services and compliance monitoring. They are seeking a motivated Junior Biologist or Lead Technician to deliver high-quality environmental consulting and biological services, requiring field and office work, and effective communication with team members and clients.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the delivery of environmental consulting services in a professional and ethical manner
- Following safety plans, protocols, and procedures while concentrating on pre-task work analysis and the continuous safety of you, your coworkers, and any other people who could be nearby while we are providing our services
- Create a culture of safety adhering to Roe's policies and plans, and the requirements of the worksites in which we work
- Conduct routine environmental monitoring, including erosion and sediment control and construction compliance monitoring (observation, field note recording, photo-documentation, and reporting)
- Conduct wildlife and plant surveys and monitoring
- Conduct water quality and soil sampling and interpret results under the direction of a Managing Biologist
- Preparation of technical reports and permit applications. Note: mentoring to support permit application and development of reporting skills will be provided
- Various administrative duties
- Ability to be available on a rotational basis after-hours and weekend for participation in Roe's Environmental Response Call-out Program – Details to follow
- Be available to work outside of normal working hours and on weekends, during busy seasons
- Demonstrate and maintain a high level of physical fitness to support the physical demands of the role, including prolonged periods of standing, walking distances of up to 5 km over uneven, slippery and/or rough terrain without rest breaks, frequent bending, and the safe lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 20 kg
- In addition to the above listed primary duties and responsibilities, other duties may be assigned from time to time by Roe’s management team, and/or Board of Directors
Skills
- B.IT or R.B.Tech designation or eligibility within one year required. Must maintain good standing with all professional or 'in-training' designations, meeting ongoing professional development requirements
- Ability to work remotely approximately 7 days per month and be available frequently for after-hours and weekend call-out for environmental response. Please indicate interest in longer stretches of remote or camp work in your application email
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License and clean Driver's Abstract. Transportation to the office is required to access equipment and fleet vehicles
- Ability to work independently and as part of a group in both remote and urban settings
- Electrofishing: Theory, Safety and Application Certification
- Erosion and Sediment Control Experience/Courses
- Level 1 First Aid
- Strong interpersonal skills for client and contractor communications
- Proficiency in environmental report writing, including CEMP and EIA documentation
- Experience with AutoCAD and/or GIS software applications
- One to three years experience
